“This is what time travel is. It’s looking at a person, and seeing them in the present and the past, concurrently. And that mode of transport only worked with those one had known a significant time.”

Tomorow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

August 8, 2023 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

CBR Bingo – Hold Steady I don’t know what I thought this book was going to be, but this novel exceeded all of my expectations. Someone who recommended it to me said she could have read 200 more pages and I agree. 300 even. 400! IT WAS SO GOOD. I wanted to follow the characters forever and ever. Weepy Warning – this book brought me to tears, to be clear, I was full-on sobbing to the point that my husband was concerned about me. This […]

It’s too early to write a clever title but honestly you should have your kids read this

Travis Daventhorpe for the Win! Volume One by Wes Molebash

August 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In the idea of the Judd Winick’s Hilo adventures, but with a bit more “weight”, yet equally funny, magical and scientific, we have Travis Daventhorpe for the Win! Volume One. Good for ages 8 to 11/young12, this book has all the fun of robots, dinosaurs, friends, bullies, wizards and dodgeball! (Okay, dodgeball might not be fun, but the scientific experiments Travis does are.) Travis is new to middle school. He has little to no social skills, but he can build sentient robots that can do […]

Kitty Sweet Tooth Makes a Movie by Abby Denson

August 1, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A while back I read the first book in the Kitty Sweet Tooth series, called Kitty Sweet Tooth (appropriate I feel). The story was simple, a cat named Kitty Sweet Tooth helps run Pop-Pops movie theater. There are a few adventures, she makes lots of new friends and the movie theater takes on a new life. Then, it ended, letting us know a sequel was coming. I figured I would read it before it came out, but there was nothing for reader copies (online like […]

Prunella: A very nice skeleton, ah, girl, ah skeleton …. individual

Prunella and the Cursed Skull Ring by Matthew Loux

August 1, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have wanted to read Prunella and the Cursed Skull Ring by Matthew Loux for a while now. I had access to an online reading copy, but it “time out” on me. Then recently, it mysteriously returned. The planets had fallen into place and it was finally the right moment to read what would be an interesting story of who really is the monster and who is not, while in the meantime, adventures await. The surface story is simple, and for the ages (strong reader, but can […]

Old friendships and older bones

Madame Badobedah and the Old Bones by Sophie Dahl

July 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Madame Badobedah and the Old Bones has great potential to be your child’s favorite story. The feel is as if Mary Poppins and Pippi Longstocking met My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry. Sophie Dahl made a clever and interestingly classical feeling book. The story is sweet and funny as we follow a young girl who lives with her parents in the hotel they run, and is  friends with an elderly lady, Madame Boadobedah, who also lives there. The girl, Mable, is narrating […]

I usually do these at the end of the month but then I went through a big reading slump March-May. And then I roared back but realized I was behind. So apologies for this being so long. There Will Be Fire **** A good, readable text on a moment in history I knew little about. Even after reading Patrick Radden Keefe’s Say Nothing, I still had a lot of problem keeping track of all the socio-political dynamics so it’s good that Rory Carroll makes it accessible […]
