I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Pitch Black by Youme and Anthony Horton

March 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

That conversation of the above line is at the end of the beginning of Pitch Black (I am seeing the title as just Pitch Black and as Pitch Black: don’t be skerd but I will go with just Pitch Black). The rest of the book will deal with probably the biggest story you will see in a short graphic novel. One day Youme meets Anthony “Tony” Horton in the subway. Tony shows her a world that few know exists, let alone sees. It is the […]

What Will I Discover by Tanya Lloyd Kyi

March 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport, Genre (science simplified & how you can do it) What Will I Discover is at the surface an easy story. It is just about scientists and what they know, but then it goes deeper into what they do not know. And our narrator starts explaining all the wonderful things that are still left to be discovered, and they might be the person to do so. Tanya Lloyd Kyi has a sweet story about science and even a little about imagination. Yes, it says it […]

Big by Vashti Harrison

March 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Oh, aren’t you a big girl, eating your dinner! Well look how big you have gotten. Now, eat up and get big and strong. When you’re little these are what the adults tell you. And they push being a “big kid” and we as kids want to be like the “big kids.” Until the day we are told there is such a thing as “too big” and that means “wrong.” And that is what our young girl is this story deals with. Vashti Harrison talks […]

Parachute Kids: A Graphic Novel by Betty C. Tang

March 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport, Own (the reader copy, but due early April)   There is a lot going on within the covers of Parachute Kids: A Graphic Novel. This book is loosely based on some of the experiences author Betty C. Tang and the experiences of others like Tang had. And thankfully they did not happen all to one person, because as I said, a lot happens. We see the kids left to their own devices, scammed out of money, issues with language, issues with racism and even […]

Good Boy V01: Good Boy Magazine #1 by Michael Sweater and Benji Nate

March 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Own This is the first Benji Nate book they had a part in that I did not enjoy. The concept of Good Boy V01: Good Boy Magazine #1 a Zine format. There are different styles and types of work (done by different authors and/or illustrators) that are included. There is everything from the woman who was once a “Playboy Bunny” like woman to the chapter that had no humanly possible way to read to the one I almost liked until the main character did something […]

Escape from M. Lemoncello’s Library, the graphic novel by Chris Grabenstein

March 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Not having read the novel, that Escape from M. Lemoncello’s Library, the graphic novel is based on (that is of the same name), I am not sure how this book was adapted. However, the author Chris Grabenstein did the adaptation, so I am assuming it is mostly the same. Regardless, this graphic novel illustrated by Douglas Holgate is a fun, easy read that has puns, hidden surprises, a good message, and a lot of books that are mentioned, that are read and that are used […]
