“As it turned out, a pissed-off drag queen with a grappling hook was a force to be reckoned with.”

Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig

March 5, 2019 by Mikki Blu 5 Comments

This book was featured on the GFY website, highly recommended by the Fug Girls, where it was touted as a cross between Alias and RuPaul’s Drag Race.  That comparison alone made me take notice!  As per the blurb:  Teenage socialite Margo Manning leads a dangerous double life. By day, she dodges the paparazzi while soaking up California sunshine. By night, however, she dodges security cameras and armed guards, pulling off high-stakes cat burglaries with a team of flamboyant young men. In and out of disguise, she’s in all the headlines. The action starts with a bang as we find Margo and her […]

Too much old, not enough new in the Box

The Everything Box by Richard Kadrey

July 23, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Everything Box got a lot of attention when it first came out, but I’ve only just now gotten to it. I don’t quite understand what all the hype was about. Yes this is an entertaining adventure story with amusing characters, but I didn’t love it. I enjoyed it, but it just wasn’t as awesome as I was hoping. 3.5 stars. First, it’s so strongly reminiscent of Good Omens (by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman) in terms of characters and plot that it comes off a little unoriginal to me. Coop is the Warlock/Adam character with a tough of Shadow […]

Summer Reading concerning an Accountant of the Vampire Variety

The Utterly Uninteresting & Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes

July 22, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I saw this book in an airport bookstore a few years ago, added it to my Goodreads, and forgot about it. I recently found a novel I really enjoyed was by the same author, and was reminded of this one. Since I had an extended travel period coming up, I figured this would be a perfect thing to bring with me. I was right. Fred is a vampire who is also an accountant. He was your typical nerd in life, and finds that not much changes in undeath. Except that it does. While Fred himself may not have changed in […]

If Mr Incredible were a bad guy in a past life

Forging Hephaestus: Villains' Code Book 1 by Drew Hayes

June 24, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Imagine a world that combines elements of The Incredibles, Discworld, and Marvel. That’s what you get in Forging Hephaestus (Villains’ Code Book 1). I really enjoyed this combination, and I really, really hope the series continues for at least a few more volumes. The basic premise is that the world contains meta-humans, those with special powers, and such people often become either heroes and join the Alliance of Heroic Champions, or a villain who joins the guild of villains.  The organization and bureaucratization of crime and justice is the Discworld element and it’s just about as well done, although here […]

At least I got more Lying Cat in this one

Saga, vol 7 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

May 10, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is volume 7 of an ongoing series. It’s not the place to start. There is no question that any person of good taste should be reading Saga, but you should start at the beginning with volume 1. I suppose that because the last volume made me very happy, this one was going to make me sad. Damn you, Vaughn and Staples and the emotional roller coaster you send me on. Temporarily stranded on Phang, a tiny comet that Wreath and Landfall have been battling it out over (like they battle for everything else), Elena, Marko and their little family […]

A British Action Movie of a Book

Strike Back by Chris Ryan

March 28, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Strike Back is an action movie of a book. Written by former SAS sergeant “Chris Ryan”, this book was the genesis of the Sky/Cinemax show of the same name. The book is similar to the Strike Back tv show but a little closer in tone to the action novels written by Alex Berenson or Lee Child. The story isn’t quite up to the level as Berenson’s John Wells books, and Strike Back’s John Porter isn’t as interesting as the stoic Jack Reacher, but the book does display the author’s real-world military experience. It’s a fun, if not not completely original, read. The protagonist, John Porter, […]

Dr Who Meets The Rook with Game of Thrones-level Dysfunction

Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor

December 24, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I picked up Just One Damned Thing After Another because I had been considering it and because I had a coupon for a local bookstore, and I don’t say no to those often. I usually don’t like first person narrative and I still don’t, but there was enough story and character here to over-ride that instinct. This story can’t quite decide if it wants to be action-adventure, character driven, sci-fi, or romance-drama. While it’s not a total success, overall the blend works pretty well. The problem is that the various elements are fairly segmented, and don’t always flow well one to […]

Didn’t really see what the fuss is about

Captain Marvel, vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez

July 10, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

Carol Danvers, who is apparently a hot-shot pilot and one of the Avengers, lives in the crown of the Statue of Liberty (you can do that?) with her sister and niece. When the Avengers find an escape pod from a spaceship with an alien refugee inside it, they decide that Carol be the one to return the girl to her homeworld, as well as take up a more permanent presence in space as a representative for the Avengers Initiative. As she returns the girl to her home planet, she discovers that they are in dire need of help, as much […]
