As Chang says: Don’t Yuck another’s Yum

Geraldine Pu and Her Lunch Box, Too! by Maggie P. Chang

March 30, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Geraldine Pu and Her Lunch Box, Too! was not something that looked like a must read. Afterall, it seemed obvious: it was going to be about a girl who carries a lunch box and there will be some issue with it: classmates think she is a “baby” for having a lunch box. Or someone was going to bully her, and the lunchbox was going to take the brunt of the abuse. However, as the adage goes: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Geraldine is […]

Nourish the Tree

The Tree in Me by Corinna Luyken

March 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do not wear your face shield when trying read a book that this poetic, and has romantic pink, greens, orange, gold, and red colors in swirly illustrations. Especially when the shield is a bit on the damaged side and already makes things a little fuzzy. The above mentioned swirly got to almost nauseous causing levels. However, do read this book, The Tree in Me (with all the good above) in your comfy reading spot, snuggled up to a kiddo or two that will sit and […]

The language we say and don’t say

The Shape of Thunder by Jasmine Warga

March 15, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Shape of Thunder is a 3.5 rating instead of a three or four (I am not sure what I will put as my rating officially as I’m writing out a draft before posting). This is because I was looking for “something” that never came about in this Jasmine Warga middle grade reader (around ages 10 to 14, but younger (and older) could read). The story alternates chapters with the two main characters, Cora and Quinn. They were best friends until “the event” and Cora […]

Be a Daisy

Daisy by Jessixa Bagley

March 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was getting into Daisy by Jessixa Bagley right up until the end. The length was not too long, there was not a lot of text, but not just “See Spot.” But then it ends, and I was left thinking, “Okay. Odd.” I think my biggest complaint (while I understand the why I am not a fan of the execution) is all the girls have flower (or plant) names. This made me think of Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes (even though he just has a few […]

DC Super Hero Girls V05: Out of the Bottle Graphic Novel. by Shea Fontana

February 23, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking for something fun, light, and easy to read. And though I noticed awhile back that the last two times I took out books from the library I ended up in the ER, I decided to take a chance. I picked out five titles (with a sixth in case one was not available) and ended up with four. Good average and considering the one I am reading; I probably will not be getting through them all too soon. Therefore, I picked up first  […]
