Avery the Fox: The Story of a Non-Binary Fox Finding Love for Themself Avery the Fox: The Story of a Transgender Fox Finding Love for Herself Avery the Fox: The Story of a Transgender Fox Finding Love for Himself Vacation lasted a week, but my online reader site thought it was longer, as it put a billion reader copies up that I had to sort through to find just the ones I wanted to read/keep. I figured I must be exaggerating. I mean it couldn’t […]

Guinea Pigs Don't Wear Pants by Chris Paul Rainbows Farias

June 2, 2026 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

The email came that said: PW’s Grab a Galley – Guinea Pigs Don’t Wear Pants. It continued Dear You Thank you for requesting Guinea Pigs Don’t Wear Pants through Publishers Weekly’s Summer 2026 Grab-a-Galley event. I’m excited to share that your name was selected as one of the winners for the title. See attached for your digital advance review copy.   So, since I won, I should read it, right?  I had a few minutes before I needed to send some reports and a few […]

This is really neat to learn about!

Pufflings Fly Free!: A Rescue Tale from Iceland by Colleen Paeff and by Linda Ólafsdóttir

May 21, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently (via email) I met someone who actually goes out and helps wood frogs and salamanders at night cross the road. I had heard about this, but never knew someone who actually did it. This person recommended their book Is It Time, Yet? (by Lynn Levine and Dirk Steinhoefel). I will be finding a copy of it soon. But in the meantime, I found Pufflings Fly Free!: A Rescue Tale from Iceland by Colleen Paeff and illustrated by  Linda Ólafsdóttir. This book is basically the […]

Don't Cause Trouble by Arree Chung

May 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Don’t Cause Trouble by Arree Chung is currently available, but I read as an online reader copy found deep in my saved links. It is a fun book about not fitting in for the reader ages 8 to 12- (young)-13. It is not overly an in depth story, but a reflective story that is relatable for most. The illustrations are pretty much what you see from the cover, but there are more details on the actual internal panels. It is still minimal in fine detailing, […]

Honestly, I didn’t even know virologist was a word, let alone how bada$$ they can be!

June Almeida, Virus Detective!: The Woman Who Discovered the First Human Coronavirus by Suzanne Slade and Elisa Paganelli

May 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Back in 2021 the book June Almeida, Virus Detective!: The Woman Who Discovered the First Human Coronavirus by Suzanne Slade and illustrator Elisa Paganelli was published. In 2026 I found a copy of it. I then read it. I liked it. And then I wrote a review about it. The theme is simple: woman scientist discovered ways of counteracting viruses, learned to use machines in ways no one had before, and would decades before it would be needed on a global scale, tells us that […]

I’ve honestly lost track how many times I have read one and hope I can repeat it with the other title

The Tree in Me by Corinna Luyken

Hello, Ocean! by Corinna Luyken

May 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Honestly, I have lost track of how many times I have read The Tree in Me by Corinna Luyken. I know I have read it at least once via an online reader and one reading of the finished book, but I am sure it has been more. In fact, it could be up to four or five times. And this is because I forget I read it, but as soon as I do I remember, I remember it was a pleasure to read each time. […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
