The Who What When Where Why and not How of crying

Sad Happens: A Celebration of Tears by Brandon Stosuy

August 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will start my review of Sad Happens: A Celebration of Tears with that I did not read every person’s confession. And second, I was not even 40% into it before I knew what I wanted to say. So, no I have not finished it yet, but my review of four is a 3.7 rounded up and I hope it keeps the same pace. Now, this is despite not reading some of the longer ones, or if the person’s mini biography did not “grab me.” As I […]

Two rabbits and emotions

Uh-Oh! Rabbit by Jo Ham

 Yippee! Rabbit by Jo Ham

Ups and Downs: A Book of Emotions  by Mike Wohnoutka

July 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If I could write a 250 worded review of the below books I would impress myself. However, since there are probably not even 250 words between them (including author, illustrator and text) I think I will combine them into a one review. All books were read via online reader copies and all due in September 2023. Uh-Oh! Rabbit by Jo Ham (I am assuming Jo Ham’s Rabbit is a series as I also read the total twenty word Yippee! Rabbit as well) is approximately half a dozen words […]

I challenge you to a duel

Duel by Jessixa Bagley

July 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read several graphic novels recently with diverse, modern casts. One of them, Duel by Jessixa Bagley, left me with two things. The first was I was not sure about a couple characters. I read Duel via a physical reader copy and the images were not complete (some were sketches, not fully fleshed out and color was not added). Though  I was enjoying Aaron Bagley’s expressive artwork when we were able to see a larger image. There are hair-raising moments, images of the fencing, the […]

Picture books are Fun

Indigo Dreaming by Dinah Johnson

Not Quite Narwhal and Friends: Weather Together by Jessie Sima

July 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Africa: Indigo dreaming has the African connection I enjoy doing picture book reviews and doing a round-up review of a few titles at once. The thing with picture books is that they are short. So, they are easy to read. And yet, they can be packed from cover to cover with amazing goodies. Just sometimes that does not lend itself to a regulation review word count. The below titles are perfect for most people, yet different enough and varied in age ranges that […]

More than a broken heart

The Faint f Heart by Kerilynn Wilson

April 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Due to a few bumps in the story arc of The Faint f Heart, but particularly due to the artwork, this book is a 4.5 (rounded up to 5). This is a love story to emotions and feelings. It has realistic, science-fiction and fantasy vibes but is all too likely to happen scenario, or at least is within reason. When you play with the heart, emotions happen, and Kerilynn Wilson explores what happens when people find a way to stop feeling those emotions.   June […]

Feelings? Yes, we have those

The Noise Inside Boys: A Story about Big Feelings by Pete Oswald

April 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story within the pages (I am assuming pages, as I read this via an online reader copy) of The Noise Inside Boys: A Story about Big Feelings has been done before. Pete Oswald talks about how we have big feelings and those are legitimate feelings. We follow the youngest of three brothers through the ups and downs of the events that give him his feelings. And see how one can deal with them. It is the illustrations of Oswald that really made things fresh. […]
