And I didn’t even mention it felt like it was book two to start with.

Silver Vessels by Steve Orlando

May 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If the graphic novel, Silver Vessels by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Katia Vecchio was any less believable, I would expect to see Bobby Ewing in the shower at the end of it. If you know that reference you’re not part of the aimed at ages of 10 and up. Who will  love the precocious teens, their hunting mysterious sunken treasure, the mysterious APEX bad guys, the coming of age elements. But this adult reader feels there were a lot of really unbelievable parts. My […]

The Love Haters by Katherine Center

June 10, 2025 by Malin 4 Comments

2.5 stars Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for this ARC. My opinions are my own. Katie Vaughn is worried about being fired, so she lies about being able to swim, and is persuaded to go to Key West to film a recruitment video about the coast guard. There she meets Tom “Hutch” Hucheson, the seemingly perfect older brother of her co-worker Cole, who has not been informed that his brother has weaselled out of filming the video. Katie is also pretty much […]

Marjory's River of Grass: Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Fierce Protector of the Everglades by Josie James

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was reading Marjory’s River of Grass: Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Fierce Protector of the Everglades by Josie James as an online reader copy on my phone. Which was a special delight in itself as I have recently had issues with my normal online site and my phone not being able to communicate with each other. The other delight was how lovely James’ book is. This is a delightful book about one woman, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and how she made the Everglades not only pretty awesome […]

No, Not You. We Named the Monkey Jack!

Bad Monkey by Carl Hiaasen

August 24, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR16 Bingo: first. This is the first of two Carl Hiaasen novels to feature criminal food inspector Andrew Yancy.  I wanted to read this before I saw the TV show since it’s received good reviews and seems like the kind of thing that is for me. I have mixed feelings on Carl Hiaasen, though I always enjoy reading his books. They start strong as he lathers on all the Florida-ness he possibly can. The line in this one about how the […]

This one’s for the bisexuals.

With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson

July 11, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 4 Book 18/30 Alicia Thompson is reliably smart and funny in all her romance books, and her characters have such heart. The setting in this one is also really fun: a tourist attraction in or near Orlando called Cold World, where it is winter all year long. Both of our main characters work there—Asa for over ten years (he’s been there since his family kicked him out for being bisexual), and Lauren for just over two (she is the […]

Because misogyny has a thousand words for “unhinged bitch” but not a single one for “multiple female orgasm”

If You Can't Take the Heat: Tales of Food, Feminism, and Fury by Geraldine DeRuiter

June 9, 2024 by carmelpie 10 Comments

I thought it appropriate that, on the day of my Cannonball, I declare that I have a new hero: Geraldine DeRuiter. In 2019, she won the James Beard Foundation Award, in the category of Personal Essay Long Form, for her Everywhereist.com blog post titled “I Made the Pizza Cinnamon Rolls From Mario Batali’s Sexual Misconduct Apology Letter.” This is not why she is my hero. However, if you read this book you may understand why her story resonated with me. If You Can’t Take the […]
