When I learned that Dick Grayson was only one of several Robins I was probably in my thirties. How could this be? I mean Bruce Wayne stayed the same, why didn’t Robin? Did he really need to be Nightwing? Red Hood? Red Robin? What does this prove?
Honestly, I don’t know if it has to prove anything, but in Juni Ba, Chris O’Halloran, Aditya Bidikar (and others) The Boy Wonder they collected some of the stories that focus on the newest addition the SuperHero of Bats and Birds family. Here, the many Robins who came before help the newest Prince of Gotham learn what family and being a hero really means. Damian Wayne is not only the newest Robin, he is the legitimate Prince of Gotham as the son of Bruce Wayne.
Of course, Damian, due to his background with his evil mother and more evil grandfather’s teachings, this Robin acts first, does before others, and doesn’t bother taking names even when he needlessly kills first. That is until the day he beheads a man, causing his fathers disappointment in him. As he tries to prove himself to his father, mother, grandfather, his “brothers” and himself, we all learn the lessons of Dick, Jason and Tim as they assist Damian come to understand their lessons.
Dark illustrations, images and story lines combine to make a comic-graphic novel that is not really too intense, but neither is it light and fluffy. You will not be seeing Adam West, but you also won’t be seeing the really Dark Knight and gang. You will see fighting, blood, a child kidnapped, death and action.
