A great book about two things I am terrible at: money and math. #CBRBingo – True Story

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis

October 8, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Smart people who think outside the box are so much fun to read about. I read this book really fast, and it was enjoyable to read the whole way through. I’ve never read a Michael Lewis book before, but I might consider reading more now. He has a simple, clean style that is really efficient at getting his story across, and he has an instinct for the best way to use his material. And he has some great underlying material here. As he notes in the Afterword (which is really great, so if you’re going to read this book, make […]

Baseball In Japan

You Gotta Have WA by Robert Whiting

August 19, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Growing up a big baseball fan, I always knew the sport was popular in Japan. I also always knew it was played differently but I didn’t know why. Not necessarily played differently rules-wise (though there is some of that, like ties for example), but culturally, there were different expectations of the players and the clubs. Robert Whiting smoothly lays the differences out in this book. I worry sometimes that westerners don’t always have a sensitivity to the nuanced differences in respective eastern cultures but he does. Despite things that made my eyes pop out of my head, there was no […]

Life is better in running shoes

Patina by Jason Reynolds.

March 18, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Track #02 Patina is written in the signature style of Jason Reynolds.  This time we look at the life of Patina, or Patty as she prefers. Due to her mother being unable to care for her and her sister, she gives custody of her daughters to her brother and sister-in-law. This brings up many issues for Patty: the biggest being, how can she care for the people she loves. She takes on a “mother roll” to her sister, her mother, her friends and forgets herself. She is not sure why she becomes angry when people “think they know” about her […]

The least toxically masculine thing you will ever read.

Check, Please!: #Hockey, Vol. 1 by Ngozi Ukazu

January 11, 2019 by narfna 3 Comments

So if you go over to Goodreads and scroll down the first page of reviews, you’ll see that nearly every review starts along the lines of, “THIS WAS SO ADORABLE.” Or “THE CUTEST EVER I’M DYING.” And now that I have read this, I too, can sympathize. This was monstrously precious. I am compelled to say this because of how cute. Check, Please! is a sweet little web comic that is finishing up later this year. It follows Eric “Bitty” Bittle, a former champion figure skater turned college hockey player, as he goes through his four years at Samwell University. […]

Spring Football is a Good Idea

Football For A Buck: The Crazy Rise and Crazier Demise of the USFL by Jeff Pearlman

November 5, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

I saw Jeff Pearlman speak on this, his new book at a nearby Barnes and Noble. He was concerned that nobody would read it. Pearlman has written books on such exciting sports subjects as Roger Clemens, the 90s Dallas Cowboys, and the 1980s Showtime Los Angeles Lakers. And yet, it was this subject, the relatively obscure minor league USFL that excited him more than anything else he’s worked on. But he knew it would be a tough sell, which is why, despite his relative success as a writer, it took so long to get published. Pearlman’s excitement shines in the […]

Decline in Fall

Big Game: The NFL In Dangerous Times by Mark Leibovich

October 18, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

I am a lifelong football fan and a Baltimore Ravens supporter. When the Ray Rice scandal hit, I swore off the sport for a year because of how poorly the NFL and the Ravens organizations respectively handled the situation. The Rice situation provided me with an excuse to do something I had wanted to do for awhile: watch less football. It’s tough to overstate what a hold the NFL had on my life in my 20s. I’d plan work, break dates, check my phone in bad circumstances to follow the league, both my beloved Ravens and my fantasy team. But […]

An American Legend, Indeed

Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand

October 6, 2018 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR 10 Bingo Entry: The Book Was Better? I spent some time pondering what I’d like to read for the “Book Was Better” category for CBR  10 Bingo. With so many options, I was falling victim to decision paralysis, when a trip to my local library helped me solve the problem. While dropping off some books, I stopped into the Friends of the Library bookstore, not expecting to find anything. But then my eye was caught by a hardbound copy of Seabiscuit in excellent condition, for the bargain price of $3.50. I could never pass up a good deal on […]

The Ghosts of Anti-Semitism Haunt Holland Through Soccer

Ajax, The Dutch, The War by Simon Kuper

August 4, 2018 by Jake 2 Comments

Read for Cannonball Run Bingo. Category: White Whale. The World Cup was on this past summer and anytime I see it, I’m inclined to read more books about soccer. I’m a big sports fan but my interest in soccer really only begun about 12 years ago when, bored out of my mind for the summer of 2006, I watched the World Cup fastidiously. Soccer is now perhaps my fourth favorite sport after baseball, football, and basketball and I’m wearing a New York City FC shirt in anticipation of the game tonight. I’m also a history junkie, particularly World War II. […]
