Success is the goal; teamwork is the game

Strikers: A Graphic Novel by Kiel Phegley and Jacques Khouri

With the Heated Rivalry craze, hockey romance books are getting a push. However, hockey has always been there. Maybe not as a romance, but it has been there. And one of those books was Strikers: A Graphic Novel by Kiel Phegley and Jacques Khouri (illustrator). Published back in 2023, this graphic novel is a fun story about friendship and teamwork. There is no romance, unless you want to say there is a bromance between the team as a whole. They are the worst team in […]

The other hockey romance

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks

Back in 2023 Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks came out. It seemed to not get the attention that other graphic novels by her seemed to get. Or at least, I didn’t see the push for it. Which is sad, since it is a fun book with romance, theater, hockey, and how it relates to life. Hicks weaves an interesting story together that gets you thinking. There were a couple of bumps in the flow for me, but overall, it was a […]

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

I don’t know how I ended up reading so many books about gay men this year (and I still have Song of Achilles on my TBR, so go figure) but by and large I’m enjoying myself, so whatever.    The Long Game (Rachel Reid) ***½ Shane and Ilya are back! Everyone’s favourite gay hockey players have moved from casual hookups to being in an actual, honest-to-God relationship – one that they still have to keep hidden from everyone because the media still pitches them as […]

In Game Changers, Kip Grady works in a juice bar and quietly hates his life when he meets famous hockey player Scott Hunter. Scott comes in to the bar several times and chats to Kip, and it takes Kip a while to realise Scott is hitting on him. The two embark on a relationship and though they get along like a house on fire, Kip wants more: he wants to be out, to be seen with Scott, not hidden away in his fancy apartment like […]

Wherein I start the gay hockey series because I wanna know what’s next for Heated Rivalry

Game Changer by Rachel Reid

Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid

I watched the first four episodes of “Heated Rivalry” on HBO and got so invested in Scott Hunter and Kip’s arc that I downloaded Game Changer. Call me a walking cliche, fine — or am I someone who just really want to see folks end up with a happy ending? And did I zoom through Game Changer like a closeted hockey star zoned in on hitting the fuck? Sorry, I mean the puck! And did I say, “Hey you know, what’s going on with Shane […]

This Skirt Won't Work!: How Women Athletes Changed Their Clothes and Changed the Game by Jennifer Cooper

History has many layers. Dresses can have many layers.  But whereas history plays out, it is hard to play most sports or ride a bicycle in dresses. Especially the outfits that many women athletes would wear before some enterprising women decided to change things up. This Skirt Won’t Work!: How Women Athletes Changed Their Clothes and Changed the Game by Jennifer Cooper and illustrator Eva Byrne follows how tennis went from a long skirt to a 1920s fashion statement. How women hockey players would change […]
