I’m a proud Odd Duck myself

Monti and Leo: A Newcomer in Pocketville by Sylvie Kantorovitz

Odd Duck by Sara Varon and Cecil Castellucci.

Monti and Leo: A Newcomer in Pocketville was a “like” read for me, but not a LIKE read.  I enjoyed Sylvie Kantorovitz’s tale of two friends, but there were things that just felt “eh” to me. It was not so much the simplities of the illustrations (sometimes I am a fan of a causal approach; sometimes not as much) as they are expressive in their minimalist detailings, but perhaps something was not moving in the direction I was looking for.  The story is about the […]

Which Witch is the worst Witch?

Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things (Courtney Crumrin, #1) by Ted Naifeh

by Leave a Comment

Can you like and dislike a book at the same time? I say yes, as the graphic novel Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things (Courtney Crumrin, #1) by Ted Naifeh is exactly that.  And due to that, I am not really sure I want to explore the rest of the books in the various Courtney Crumrin series. Unless, there is a collection of everything…. Well a girl can dream right? There is really nothing likable about any of the characters, even Courtney who we follow through […]

Junior High but with magic and glitter

Kira and the (Maybe) Space Princess: (A Graphic Novel) (Magic Girls) by Megan Brennan

by Leave a Comment

Kira and the (Maybe) Space Princess: (A Graphic Novel) (Magic Girls) by Megan Brennan is a three rounded from a 2.5 rating. This is because on one level this graphic novel is a cute, manga inspired, girl power story. It is a typical “in middle school and it stinks (only I didn’t say stinks)” story. We have the outsider looking in, but wants to be on the inside. However, on the other hand these are not the nicest people in the universe. And I say […]

CBR15 Bingo: Adulthood

Happy Place by Emily Henry

4.5 stars CBR15 Bingo: Adulthood 15-word review: Harriet and Wyn broke up months ago, but can’t tell their friends. Sexual tension follows. Official book description: Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that […]

When a firebird crashes into your life

Atana V01: Atana and the Firebird by Vivian Zhou

by Leave a Comment

The best way to describe the graphic novel, Atana V01: Atana and the Firebird is that it is a mix of K. O’Neil,  Swan Lake by Rey Terciero & Tidesong by Wendy Wu. In other words, it is a traditional fantasy story with female protagonists and magical elements. The artwork is uncomplicated, with basic details. It is not flashy but not plain either (there is a lovely image at the end that is perfect in that it has both the simplicity and it holds a […]

A girl, her best boy friend (but not boyfriend) and her crush

Surprisingly Sarah (Emmie & Friends) by Terri Libenson

by Leave a Comment

Surprisingly Sarah (Emmie & Friends) by Terri Libenson is the seventh installment of Libenson’s Emmie & Friends series. It is perfectly their signature style dealing with Lakeside school and the middle schoolers that go there. There are the typical growing pains, and how each character a book focuses on goes through them. And while each character has dealt with similar things, no two characters’ stories are exactly alike. And like previous graphic novels, the other characters pop up showing where we are in the timeline […]
