Katabasis by R. F. Kuang

February 22, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I could not get more than halfway through R. F. Kuang’s Babel. The world and magic system were amazing; I could not stay interested in all the character personal drama. Thus I was hesitant to try Katabasis. I finally did though, as I have some experience in the world of higher education as well as the Classical background to appreciate that title reference. On the other hand, that didn’t help The Secret History; hated that, mostly because of the stupid unlikeable character drama. Tragedy in […]

The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison

February 22, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I knew that The Tomb of Dragons was part 3 of a trilogy that was itself kind of a side series from a stand-alone novel The Goblin Emperor. Now all four are being framed as “Within the Chronicles of Osreth” (back cover), so I’m really hoping there’s going to be more of this world and characters. The Tomb of Dragons is a good ending with decent closure for Thara Celehar’s story, but there’s also plenty of room left open for more to come, including the […]

Reasons why this is a cookbook not for me, at least not at this time

Good Things by Samin Nosrat

February 1, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Sometimes it’s pretty clear when a book is probably just fine, but maybe not for you, or at least you right now. Good Things by Samin Nosrat has some good things going for it. It’s got a lot of parts where there ar basically sets of theme and variation on a recipe or ingredient which can be nice when you’ve got a lot of something but don’t want to get bored. The premise of focusing on kind of simple pleasures is also something I can […]

Plant Puns and Getting Spicy

Violet Thistelwaite is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz

February 1, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

There’s a blurb on the back of Violet Thistlewaite is Not a Villain Anymore that says that this is a “cozy fantasy with plant magic, love, and second chances”. That’s generally accurate, except that this feels more on the romance side of romantasy, and things get spicier than I was expecting from something with “cozy” in the description. That’s not necessarily a complaint, but it might be a little bit about expectations. Basically, Violet was known as the Thornwitch, the powerful right hand of an […]

Talking Donuts Explode

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

January 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Dungeon Crawl Carl is still going pretty strong in book 4. Carl, along with Donut, and a few others are on floor 5, which seemingly requires a bit of teamwork or at least coordination between groups. It really takes a while for the story to get going, maybe a little too much time doing some scene setting that just doesn’t seem that necessary. The probably haunted buried temple thing likewise has some good potential that really doesn’t get developed. The flying gnomes and the camel […]

Healthy Vegan Breakfasts & Lunches by Jillian Glenn

January 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

For several years now, I’ve kind of struggled with the most important meal of the day. If I’m going for a run, as I do most mornings, I need something I can bring with me to work, so a lot of typical hot breakfast things don’t work terribly well for that, especially if I’m packing it the night before. I also typically don’t want something especially heavy, which again, can be limiting. So when I found a breakfast-lunch specific book, I was hopeful. A lot […]
