Kimchi in everything!

The Korean Vegan Homemade by Joanne Lee Molinaro

January 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I took a chance; I ended up kind of feeling like a book from a few years ago looked better than it was for me, but when I saw the sequel, I decided to try it out again. The Korean Vegan: Homemade is a little more personal story oriented than the first one, which is kind of a cookbook trend the past few years, but that’s not the main thing; that would be the recipes. One the one hand, they look more do-able, especially with […]

Finding out why it’s a bad idea to put your name in blood in a mysterious old book

The Last Soul Among Wolves by Melissa Caruso

January 1, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

A reunion of old friends, a will and curse, and a locked-room murder mystery that escalates, featuring new-ish mom investigator Kembral Thorne jumping around the levels of reality to solve the mystery, stop the curse, and solve the murder(s), all while avoiding (mostly supernatural) enemies and a giant spectral wolf, and trying to keep things professional with girlfriend who is also on the job. That’s most of the things going on in The Last Soul Among Wolves. Since this is the second volume of the […]

So close but then nope

The Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook by Imana Grashuis, Tylor Starr

January 1, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader 3 Comments

Have you ever read a book and started to appreciate it, only for one small detail to ruin the whole thing? When I picked up The Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook, it was clearly stated that the book was in no way officially affiliated with the franchise and its author, so that didn’t bother me. The introduction is a little preachy about vegan ethics, but it’s by Evanna Lynch, the actress for Luna Lovegood. It’s nothing I haven’t seen before in vegan cookbooks. The thing […]

Magical Girls Grown Up

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner

November 1, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 24: Swap Free Space for Diaspora Free Space invoked because I don’t have anything specific in mind for the Diaspora square and time is not on my side. I picked up The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry for the title. No other reason. Turns out this is actually book 2 in a series, but that doesn’t actually matter, as this story is pretty stand alone as far as I could tell. A lot is classic fantasy and romance tropes getting mixed up. Sometimes there’s […]

Counting to Ten in Chinese Food

One Two Three Dim Sum by Rich Lo

November 1, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

This book is very simple; it’s a kids book of the “let’s learn to count to 10” variety. It’s mostly simple pictures of dim sum or related items, appearing in amounts in ascending order. Besides the food theme, and colorful basic art, this counting book is in Mandarin Chinese. It’s got both the characters and the words written out for how to say “one menu” up to “ten fortune cookies”, Each page has three panels, one for the English word and Arabic numeral, one for […]
