Lots of cat pictures and cat things

Cat by Leila Jarbouai, Hannah Shaw, Phaidon

April 18, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

This one I picked up for the cover. Cartoon style black cat curled up, title simply “Cat”. It’s an art book, over 200 pages of cats in painting, photograph, wood cut, and objects over time. Each page has an image and the museum description (although not always where the original currently lives). There’s almost a little bit of everything, from graffiti, to an Hermes scarf, to a Garfield strip (had to wait a while for that one) to Nyan-cat to Warhol and Doré to da […]

Round up at the O-K-bookstore

It Started with a Book Ban by Linda Ravin Lodding

Tic-errific Me: A book about Tourette syndrome (Disability Books for Kids) by Alicia Meyers and Cait Brennan

The Kimchi Fridge by Tina Cho and Cindy Kang

March 6, 2026 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Round up time for my beloved picture books. All titles were read via an online reader copy.   BOOK ONE It Started with a Book Ban by Linda Ravin Lodding A fun and silly way to talk about the seriousness of the idea of Book Banning. And while I don’t promote banning things, I must admit sometimes the color green is annoying to me, too. (And pink, pink can be too cheerful).  Obviously Lodding uses humor to get the message across and goes into extreme […]

Helping hands keeping stories alive

The Keeper of Stories by Caroline Kusin Pritchard

November 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story within the pages of The Keeper of Stories by Caroline Kusin Pritchard and illustrator  Selina Alko is fairly simple. It is about the Jewish Theological Seminar library told in poetic language that tells from the start to the devastating fire in 1966. The publisher description says: When a fire breaks out at the Jewish Theological Seminary library, helping hands from across the community rally together to save the books and preserve the stories within the pages. Includes factual backmatter on the Jewish Theological […]

Silly ol’ book

How a Bear Became a Book: The Collaboration That Created Winnie-the-Pooh by Annette Bay Pimentel

October 21, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A clever ol’ story about a clever and silly ol’ bear is what you learn about in How a Bear Became a Book: The Collaboration That Created Winnie-the-Pooh. The pieces fit as if you’re reading a Winnie the Pooh story, the illustrations as if reading a WTP book and they come together to make a modern classic. It is less a “solid story” and more of a poetic telling of how a bear came into existence. Things are less hard facts but taking the facts […]

Down With The Miss Vicky’s!

Down with Lime Books!: A Story about Book Banning by Jan Zauzmer

October 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Miss Vicky might tell us Down with Lime Books! But what she does not realize is that the kids like lime books, and pink and purple, and blue, and yellow and read…. I mean red. Yes they love to read them all. Of course, this humorous look at book banning is silly and a bit tongue in cheek, but Down with Lime Books!: A Story about Book Banning by Jan Zauzmer and Blanca Millán is about a serious subject As mentioned, the character Miss Vicky […]

Collecting inspirational thoughts

Inspiring Quotes from Children's Classics: For Growing Up by Hannah Barnaby

April 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While there are mostly uplifting and positive quotations fill Inspiring Quotes from Children’s Classics: For Growing Up, there are one or two silly or maybe a bit not so “uplifting” ones that will make you chuckle. From classic quotes (Moby Dick) to contemporary reads (Princess Academy), there is a little bit of everything included. Therefore you can find Moomins and Christopher Paolini next to CS Lewis and Ramona the Pest. Sometimes, the phrase is not necessarily something I would consider “inspirational” or even has a […]
