Deja vu recipes?

The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon

March 27, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I really feel like I’ve looked through The Oh She Glows Cookbook before, but I can’t find it in my review history. I know I have one of the follow-up books, which might be why this one feels so familiar, but I’m just not sure. It’s from 2014 so the other alternative is that most of the contents has been done similarly by someone later that I have seen. It bugs me a little not knowing. This is a perfectly serviceable vegan cookbook that’s got […]

Not much edge to the veg

The Edgy Veg by Candice Hutchings

September 21, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 16: Culture The Edgy Vedge is a bit dated, but it demonstrates both vegan food and Youtube content creator culture. Full disclosure 1: I don’t hang out on Youtube a lot. That said, I can see how the “quirky-cute” vibe the writing tries for might have been popular in the video version; I have not looked that up. The written version gets a little annoying, like someone is trying to hard to be funny. First of all, I see very little “edgy” in trying […]

A timely reminder for outdoor cooking

Grilling Vegan Style by John Schlimm

May 18, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Grilling Vegan Style is a) basic, b) more varied than I’d guess, c) mildly inspiring. I own a small charcoal grill (ground-level standard Weber) and I live in a region where grilling season is essentially March through October. I might actually want to pull that little grill out of the garage, clean it, and try out a few things. The first chapter is actually about grilling equipment, and the various options ranging from gas to charcoal to electric to stove-top to hybrids. You get general […]

Cooking by numbers equals 20 percent chance of cauliflower

Vegan Buddha Bowls by Cara Carin Cifelli

March 22, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It’s an interesting thing to me that sometimes cookbooks often have favored ingredients not directly related to the theme or title; case in point, Vegan Buddha Bowls seems enamored of cauliflower with lesser attention to sweet potato, carrot, and cabbages. For example, in the first section, “Beautiful, Bountiful Buddha Bowls”, there are 17 recipes. Of those 17, 4 rely on sweet potato, and 5 on cauliflower as the main starch. The salad bowl have 1 sweet potato and 2 cauliflower out of 15 (1/5, 20%); […]

An Asian option for Veganuary, especially if you like eggplant

Vegan Asian by Jeeca Uy

December 30, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

For probably my last review of the year, let’s go with the second cookbook I plan on starting the year with Vegan Asian: A Cookbook. Turns out this is another blogger turned author publication, btu it looks pretty promising. Most everything looks doable and there’s only 1 recipe that uses an unusual ingredient not needed anywhere else in the book. I hate that, when you’re given an ingredient to use with not substitution options and no other uses for what the author ahs to know […]

Fake Meat without the Butcher Shop

The Herbivorous Butcher by Aubry Walch, Kale Walch

December 30, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I’m really glad I didn’t fly home this year based on the travel chaos caused by the weather; I drove. What I did get stuck with though was indoors for a few days during blizzard conditions and dangerous windchills; that meant that even though I was pretty close geographically to the Herbivorous Butcher, I didn’t get to go. At least I got to stop at one of my favorite independent bookshops on the way (Boswell Books in Milwaukee WI) and got the cookbook. The Herbivorous […]
