Craft – boats; knitting; a character makes something; this book is a good example (or bad example) of the craft of writing.

I decided it would be the most fun to explore this one from several unusual angles ranging from witchcraft to spacecraft to baking. Hope something on this list inspires you!

• A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking  by T. Kingfisher – witchcraft & baking – love this book, Kingfisher’s best in my opinion.
• Orbital by Samantha Harvey – spacecraft – one day on an international space station.
• To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis – watercraft – a time travel take off of Three Men in a Boat.
• The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec – witchcraft – reimagined Norse mythology.
• Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes – home improvement (DIY craft) – memoir about restoring a Tuscan villa.
• Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand – watercraft – true story of an Air Force lieutenant’s survival in the Pacific on a tiny raft.
• The Martian by Andy Weir – spacecraft – astronaut tries to get home from Mars.
• Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein – aircraft – female pilot spies during WWII.
• A Curious Kind of Magic by Mara Rutherford – witchcraft – cozy fantasy centered around a magical curiosity shop.
• The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson – home improvement (DIY craft) – mystery surrounding a woman and her contractor.
• The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown – watercraft – story of the 1936 USA Olympic crew team.
• Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl – cooking – hysterical memoir about Reichl’s early life and career.
• Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano – aircraft – 12 year old Edward is the sole survivor of an airplane crash.
