Before the Tiger King there was Frederic Brremaud

Love V01 The Tiger, by Frederic Brremaud

September 19, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Due to wordless format of Love V01 The Tiger, this review might contain spoilers: The gorgeous illustrations that unfortunately (fortunately?) shows nature at nature’s best, by Federico Bertolucci, are the focus of the story as this is (as said) wordless. The reader follows a Tiger as it roams the jungle trying to find food and shelter, the food tries to escape (sometimes winning), and even the tiger tries to escape from various dangers. The distraction of a tiger allows other creatures to sneak in, but […]

Zap! Clap! Boom! The Story of a Thunderstorm by Laura Purdie Salas

Queen Elizabeth: Volume 87 (Little People, Big Dreams) by Sanchez Vegara

September 14, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is time for picture a book round up. Below are two radically different, but equally good titles.  Zap! Clap! Boom! The Story of a Thunderstorm is a poetic look at the excitement, softness, loudness, strength of a Thunderstorm. The start, middle, and ending of a storm are given by simple text of Laura Purdie Salas. Their work is complimented by Elly MacKay and their equally complicated, but familiar and comfortable, illustrations. The poetry of a storm comes to life in a way you might […]

The Ocean Is Kind of a Big Deal by Nick Suluk

September 9, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Ocean Is Kind of a Big Deal is Nick Suluk’s latest creation. You might now them better as the Lars the Awkward Yeti author and illustrator, or the books The Brain Is Kind of a Big Deal and The Sun Is Kind of a Big Deal. The humor we know in Awkward Yeti is there, but the clever way of learning is added. The book is cartoon illustrations and for the higher preschool to first or second grader (the second grader might be a […]

1967 was not groovy all over

I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967 Graphic Novel) by Georgia Ball

August 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The I Survived Series in the novel format is fun, but I think they were (especially I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967 Graphic Novel) was meant for the graphic novel genre. However, for the sensitive reader, there might be a few images and situations that might not be great for them. Adapted by Georgia Ball from the Lauren Tarshis series, there is no question what side the author is on when it comes to who is the “good bear” and who is the […]

My body of work

Pond by Jim LaMarche

Dwayne Johnson by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

July 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Bodies Level One Body has several meanings. However, it usually means a physical breathing thing, or once was breathing., yet it can me an authors “body of work” or the body of your car. Or several other things. I am focusing on two types of body. A body of water and a human body. When a group of friends find a neglected pond in their favorite play area, the pass and present come together because of a body of water. Jim LaMarche’s Pond is […]

Remember the connection

Remember by Joy Harjo

July 14, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Joy Harjo’s poem is adapted in this picture book format. Remember is a simple and straightforward story about family, nature, and themselves. The illustrations are richly created by Michaela Goade. Both author and illustrator were inspired and influenced by their own cultural backgrounds (of the Mvskoke Nation and Tlingit culture respectfully). The story itself we know, but it is still powerful and thoughtful. But for me, the illustrations of Goade were what made the book pop. The images are deep, colorfully, busy details, something that […]
