cbr14bingo Bodies Level One
Body has several meanings. However, it usually means a physical breathing thing, or once was breathing., yet it can me an authors “body of work” or the body of your car. Or several other things. I am focusing on two types of body. A body of water and a human body.
When a group of friends find a neglected pond in their favorite play area, the pass and present come together because of a body of water. Jim LaMarche’s Pond is a modern classic. With their classical, paintings for illustrations and the poetic, slightly mature tone to his books, each one is good for the adult and child. Pond was a
little slow at first, as while the illustrations are lush, soothing, they can also be busy, crowded and a bit overwhelming. And the body of the text does blend into the body of the artwork. But once you get into the flow of things LaMarche does not disappoint. Our story is how a few friends, and their families make a spot for rest, relaxation and for fun. The story is how those people were able to find a spot for wildlife to come back to the area. We see ducks, deer, and all sorts of creatures of a pond ecosystem. And we follow the seasons as it shows how it grows, breaths and lives. How the area is a “body” that is alive.
Now, I could have also gone with a more physical body as the one Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara talks about in their picture book, Dwayne Johnson. Yes, that Dwayne Johnson. The man that would go from Little Dwayne who wanted to be like his father and grandfather, who would become a football player, who would then become a WWE wrestler, then a household name with is comedies and action movies. The man that would be called The Rock. Johnson would build his body physically up, until he learned that if one’s mind is not balanced, you are truly not healthy. Lirios Bou’s illustrations are goofy, cartoon-like and fun. There are little details, but overall, the story does not hurt for the lack of them, but only enhanced by what is already there.
Pond is best for a child that can sit and listen to a story, mostly as there is little traditional action, or a child who might be in an early chapter book level, but still likes illustrations. And Dwayne Johnson is for the at least four to seven crowd, or a reader starting out or needs a little help. And of course, for an adult fan of The Rock as a bit of a joke, but also because you are looking for something a fan who has everything else.
