Lulu and the Others: A True Story by Eliot Schrefer and A.G. Ford

February 19, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Eliot Schrefer and illustrator A.G. Ford created Lulu and the Others: A True Story. Now, I am not completely sure that is funny, sweet and would make a fun read aloud, is really really true, but I am sure it was at least inspired by real events. You see, I have a hard time believing that any animal would have a banana shaped cup! How pedestrian…  All jokes aside, Lulu was a bonobo and lived with her human family Mother, Father and Sister. They were […]

My body of work

Pond by Jim LaMarche

Dwayne Johnson by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

July 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Bodies Level One Body has several meanings. However, it usually means a physical breathing thing, or once was breathing., yet it can me an authors “body of work” or the body of your car. Or several other things. I am focusing on two types of body. A body of water and a human body. When a group of friends find a neglected pond in their favorite play area, the pass and present come together because of a body of water. Jim LaMarche’s Pond is […]

Why you should make friends with the rat in your house

Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach

June 26, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

My biggest problem with Fuzz is that the whole premise is kind of misleading; this is not really a book about animals breaking laws; it’s mentioned that elephants have killed people, rats and mice destroy agriculture (theft sort of) seagulls destroy the Easter flowers at St Peter’s in the Vatican, and deer cause a lot of traffic damage, but none of this seems to actually be the point. Fuzz is really a book about humans and animals not always getting along, basically there’s a lot […]

These were 100% cover reads, but they (mostly) ended up being great!

The Tiger Came to the Mountains (The Trespass Collection, #1) by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Wildlife (The Trespass Collection, #2) by Jeff VanderMeer

The Backbone of the World (The Trespass Collection, #3) by Stephen Graham Jones

Stag (The Trespass Collection, #4) by Karen Russell

A Righteous Man (The Trespass Collection, #5) by Tochi Onyebuchi

Bloody Summer (The Trespass Collection, #6) by Carmen Maria Machado

As mentioned in this post’s title, I saw these covers and immediately went OOOOH. Click click click. Free? Okay! Also, the idea of various genres of story that deal with nature and wildlife clashing with humans appeals to me. I did four of them by audio, and all four narrators were excellent (even for the one I two-starred), and two by Kindle. If you have Prime, they are free for you. Some of them really surprised me! “Wildlife,” by Jeff VanderMeer — 2 STARS This […]

The Nature of Nature: Why We Need the Wild by Enric Sala

December 20, 2021 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

In the antepenultimate chapter of The Nature of Nature, conservationist and National Geographic Explorer in Residence Enric Sala shares the story of how, in 2012, he and some colleagues sought to persuade Gabonese President Bongo Ondimba of the importance of protecting the country’s marine life. The president listened politely to Sala’s presentation, but when his interest began to wane, the team offered to let Ondimba pilot a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that would allow the leader to observe the life beneath the water in real […]

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart!

I Am Still Alive by Kate Alice Marshall

March 30, 2019 by cosbrarian 3 Comments

I’m really sorry for naming this review after the most cliche song I could have quoted — OR AM I? Sixteen-year-old Jess has been through it this year.  She survived a terrible car crash that killed her mother on impact. She’s left scarred and her leg is irrevocably damaged, despite the diligence she has devoted to her physical therapy. And now, the court has ordered her custody to the father she has barely known, transported there by an old family friend named Gil. Gil does […]
