The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno Garcia

Silvia Moreno-Garcia does noir as well as you think she would – brilliantly

The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno Garcia

Ulises Linares (not his real name) is a conman who engages in lonely hearts and romance cons. At almost 30, and after the death of his father, he’s feeling a pressure to pull a con that will give him some stability. He decides to pursue Perla Inclan, a woman whose family once owned a reasonably successful coffee company in Puerco Ahogado (which means “drowned pig”), in the mountains of Veracruz. But Perla is no easy mark. And her niece, Inés, clocks him pretty quickly. The […]

“Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches.”

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

April 29, 2026 by stegolily Leave a Comment

Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s work has been hit-or-miss for me in the past. I liked Gods of Jade and Shadow, loved Mexican Gothic, but didn’t much care for The Daughter of Doctor Moreau. I’m happy to report though, that I very much enjoyed The Bewitching. This is a gothic horror novel, following three young women across three different timelines. The main storyline follows Minerva, a graduate student in the 1990s, who is writing a graduate thesis about obscure horror novelist Beatrice Tremblay. The second timeline follows Minerva’s great-grandmother Alba as a young […]

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This is hands down my favorite book of Moreno-Garcia since Mexican Gothic. I don’t know about anyone else, but I found some of her other works not hitting it for me. This one had it all, memorable characters, a very strong plot, and a great ending. The Bewitching follows in essence three distinct timelines that all come together in the end. Timeline one follows Minerva, an international graduate student from Mexico that is currently enrolled in Stoneridge College in Massachusetts in 1998. Minerva is trying to […]

Leopard in a Woman’s Skin

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

March 29, 2026 by Pooja 1 Comment

Carlota leads a sheltered life as the only daughter of Dr. Moreau, who creates human-animal hybrids on a remote estate in Mexico. But when the son of her father’s sponsor comes to visit, it sets into motion a chain of events which upends everything she knows about her father’s work, and about herself. I haven’t read The Island of Doctor Moreau, but luckily you don’t need to have to done so to enjoy this book – though I’m sure I probably missed an Easter egg or […]

Back when there were still witches

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

October 5, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While I really enjoyed a few of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s novels, I was hesitant about this one. While her release before this one, The Seventh Veil of Salome, should have been right up my alley, I ended up giving up on it fairly early. It also had a bit of a dual/multi timeline and narrator thing going on and I just ended up not quite being as interested in some of them to keep reading. When I saw this one also involved multiple time lines, I […]

B*Witched

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

October 4, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: ‘B’ Horror isn’t my usual genre, but it’s October, and I really enjoyed one of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s previous novels (Mexican Gothic), so I figured I would give her latest release, The Bewitching, a try. This is a novel about witches, told over three timelines. Minerva, in 1998, is a Mexican grad student studying horror literature in New England. Her thesis is on her favourite author, Beatrice “Betty” Tremblay, who attended the same college in the 1930s. Minerva gains access to papers via a friend of […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
