Joy Harjo’s poem is adapted in this picture book format. Remember is a simple and straightforward story about family, nature, and themselves. The illustrations are richly created by Michaela Goade. Both author and illustrator were inspired and influenced by their own cultural backgrounds (of the Mvskoke Nation and Tlingit culture respectfully).
The story itself we know, but it is still powerful and thoughtful. But for me, the illustrations of Goade were what made the book pop. The images are deep, colorfully, busy details, something that must slowly be read (this means the text and the illustrations). The cover gives you much of what you will find between the covers.
It was this part of the story that can capture the adult reader, and the younger reader/listener can just calmly explore. While not a traditional action-packed story, it is still nice. The best audience would be for at least five and up who can sit and appreciate a book. It could work best as a one-on-one, but also would easily work for a group read aloud.
I am interested in reading some of Harjo’s other work but want to find more books created by/illustrated by Michaela Goade. I have read We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom. And like with Lindstrom’s title, the pairing of artwork and text is perfect. I hope the rest of the books are similar.
I do highly recommend this book as a gift for your family, friends, and classroom. And even purchase copies (from your favorite independent bookstore, of course!) for our adult friends as well.
