Quirky is the World

qualo & Mage vs. the Rage of the Bakunawa: A Graphic Novel Volume 1 by Kara Bodegón-Hikino

February 9, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Quirky is the first word that comes to mind about Squalo & Mage vs. the Rage of the Bakunawa: A Graphic Novel by Kara Bodegón-Hikino. And then maybe silly, odd, not necessarily original but not derivative (okay, that’s a phrase). And maybe it is not the smoothest read, but it was a fun read nonetheless. It did its job by entertaining and (for me) was an easy read to give myself a break from all the difficult things I was reading. Yet there is enough […]

Everyone Sux But You by K. Wroten

February 2, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am assuming the K. Wroten of Everyone Sux But You, is the same author as Cannonball, which I read back in 2019. The odds are they are the same person, but if not, my apologies.  However, the feel of both books and the art style do say they probably are created by the same person. Now, do not get me wrong, I liked this book. However, it reminded me of a lot of things I have already read. Therefore, there was nothing New and […]

Pizza Face: A Graphic Novel by Rex Ogle and Dave Valeza

February 2, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I knew I had read Four Eyes by Rex Ogle, I had thought I hadn’t read Pizza Face: A Graphic Novel (Four Eyes series) also by Rex Ogle and Dave Valeza. Yet, near the middle of things I said, “Oh you have read this book!” But I needed a light read as I had a tough read coming and a semi-tough read behind me, so this was a good cleaning of the senses. Nothing new happens on the pages if you are an adult […]

Tiny Garden: A Picture Book by Deborah Underwood

Baba Palooza: A Picture Book by A. D. Ghani

February 2, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lunch one day was a slightly cold Caesar chicken wrap. Why? I mean I purchased it warm. Well, I thought I had lost my credit card. And after three really bad days, that would have been the brown icing (if ya know what I mean) on the cake. Therefore, I tore my purse apart. That took longer than expected as I have used said bag to be a catchall for things recently (several pens, a coffin shaped sticky note pad, tiny 3D Mickey Moused eared […]

Journey to Tomioka by Laurent Galandon

February 2, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Journey to Tomioka by Laurent Galandon, translated by Owen Smith and Anne Smith with illustrations by Michaël Crouzat was read via an online reader copy. In June 2026, however, you can find a copy, which I highly recommend. The publisher, First Second, has become one of those publishers for me that I might not always love something they published, in fact, I might not even like it, but I always respect what happened and the time it takes to make something that can be thoughtful, […]

Once upon a time, there was a seemingly ugly cygnet (of sorts) and a probably utterly doomed prince

The Swan's Daughter by Roshani Chokshi

January 20, 2026 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC. My opinions are my own. Demelza is the seventh and youngest daughter of Araminta, a legendary veritas swan (extremely beautiful women who have the power to turn into swans, and whose voices compel anyone who hears it to tell the truth) and Prava, a centuries-old, very ambitious, and some would say, evil wizard. However, when veritas swans fall in love, the person they love gains control over them through a magical necklace […]
