I am assuming the K. Wroten of Everyone Sux But You, is the same author as Cannonball, which I read back in 2019. The odds are they are the same person, but if not, my apologies. However, the feel of both books and the art style do say they probably are created by the same person.
Now, do not get me wrong, I liked this book. However, it reminded me of a lot of things I have already read. Therefore, there was nothing New and Fresh to the actual storyline. Still, it is a good read. There are things that you might not have found in other places, yet the comfort of having read this theme before is good, too. If this is your first time reading a coming of age story with LGBTQ characters and it is set in the early-mid 2000’s and not “now,” then it is new, mysterious and surprising. Just because I know what probably will happen next does not take away from the reading enjoyment and learning about the characters.
The illustrations are both wow that was cool and okay, not my thing. I think the bumps and flows of things were what worked for me and allowed it to work on many levels for all types of readers. I would say you should probably be at least 13 to adult, but parents know your 12 and up reader. The characters are set in high school, there is suggestion of suicidal tendency and a potential suicide of the main characters parent, so things are serious but I felt well presented.
Are the characters loveable? No. Are they likable? Also no. However, they are interesting to read about and are relatable in several ways.
