While I knew I had read Four Eyes by Rex Ogle, I had thought I hadn’t read Pizza Face: A Graphic Novel (Four Eyes series) also by Rex Ogle and Dave Valeza. Yet, near the middle of things I said, “Oh you have read this book!” But I needed a light read as I had a tough read coming and a semi-tough read behind me, so this was a good cleaning of the senses.
Nothing new happens on the pages if you are an adult reading this book. Especially if you read a lot of middle reader stories and/or graphic novels. But kids? Yeah, this series will be good for you.
Have you been a preteen before? Ages 12 and 13? Then you could read this and know that everything is pretty much gospel to your experiences. Are you going to be ages 10 to 13? Then read this and the first book in the series, Four Eyes to find out some of the more dramatic elements of growing up.
The events are based on Ogle’s life. He is dealing with the pre-teen bully we all deal with. He has a lot of misunderstandings, girlfriend and best friend issues. We see characters who are nice and of course, some not so nice. Some of them will become friends, others we tell take a hike Mac! There are bullies and we see why they are who they are. We see friends insecurities and we are sure we are the “only one” who has it this hard. It is Puberty 101.
And that’s icky.
But it can be funny, sweet and a nice second favorite candy read. The illustrations are bold, bright and simple. It does not scream, “I AM THE BEST” but says, “I am good. Come join me for some friendship.” And in the end, that (and sometimes a grandmother who gets you) is all you need.
