Racism is a very real thing, even in Norway

Kvit, norsk mann (White Norwegian man) by Brynjulf Jung Tjønn

January 18, 2025 by Malin Leave a Comment

Nowhere Bingo 2025: A poetry collection The author of this poetry collection was adopted from South Korea by a childless Norwegian couple when he was three years old. Throughout this rather short, but very impactful poetry collection, he writes about his constant feeling of exclusion and lack of belonging. As a child of Asian descent in a small western Norwegian village surrounded by white people, he obviously stood out among the other children. Adopted by farmers to take over their farm when they grew old, […]

Looking for Jane by Heather Marshall

January 3, 2025 by narfna Leave a Comment

Hello, unsettlingly relevant book. This feels even more relevant now than it did three years ago when it was published. [frustrated sigh] This definitely felt like a debut (some small pacing issues, and a plot choice that detracted from the tension of the story, etc.) but the subject matter was so fascinating, and the lives of these women so clearly on the page emotionally carried the book and made it extremely compelling, despite its flaws. We are following three women in three different time periods: […]

I like picture books

The Duck With No Luck by Gemma Merino

Stray Dog for Christmas: How Suzy Was Adopted by Jack Jokinen

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

How many times will I tell you I really like picture books? Oh at least once more, or I should say at least this review. Not only are they quick for the adult reader, but they allow you to spend time with your favorite little reader, or make a reader with the right book, or find your classroom having a quiet time. And these two books fit the ticket.  Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the story, The Duck With No Luck by Gemma […]

The Wild Ones

Snow Foal by Susanna Bailey

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I would have enjoyed Susanna Bailey’s Snow Foal a lot when I was about ages 10 to 14. I would have liked the free spirit of the main character, how she struggles to be independent, how she needs to go home, and how she learns home can be where the heart is, even if it does not always include all the people you love. As an adult, I still appreciated most things, but sometimes Addie’s attitude left  little something to be desired. The other characters […]

Our Wish for You: A Story About Open Adoption by Dano Moreno

Other Words for Nonno by Dave Cameron

January 4, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

September 2023 had two interesting books come out. Of course, it had more than that, so I should say that 2023 had a lot of books come out and September 2023 had two of those that I read in 2024. They were found as I was cleaning up my online reader copies, which is going to take me well into 2024 to even dent, while I find new 2024s and will need to balance the two. However, I am glad I took the time to […]

Ah! Love!

Eyes That Weave the World’s Wonders by Joanna Ho

Love Grows by Ruth Spiro

Say It with Me (Dilo Conmigo) by Nancy S. Torres

October 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes a theme takes a little while to find when I look at books to write as one fun, roundup review. but the three below took no time at all to find a connection. Each one is about love. Love of family, love of yourself, and love even when we are far away from our loved ones.  Love of family and self is the theme in Eyes That Weave the World’s Wonders. Joanna Ho and Liz Kleinrock (also of Come and Join Us!: 18 Holidays […]
