An elephant never forgets. Until she does

Never Forget Eleanor by Jason June

February 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport new to me author (though I had heard the name Jason June, I realized, I have never actually read them!)   Jason June you are a mean, person! How could you pull on my heartstrings with your lovely story of a grandmother elephant and her grandson elephant going through a difficult situation? Why did you make me cry? Of course, you Loren Long, I blame, too!  Those sweet, illustrations of adorable elephant ears and big eyes looking up at his grandmother while they do […]

Hundred Years of Happiness by Thanhha Lai

April 4, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had many emotions and thoughts while reading Hundred Years of Happiness. I was wondering the nationality of the family (you learn Vietnamese) as I was curious where the food came from and where the traditional represented (colors are important to cultures and I was wondering why white was not used).  Then, I would become emotional as I realized this is not really a happy story, but a bittersweet one about the love of a grandchild and grandparents. And where one grandparent, the grandmother, is […]

Through the Chasm of Time

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Mosley

February 12, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

This book is really tough to qualify and really easy to appreciate. It seems like since the aughts, almost 20 years since he published Devil In a Blue Dress that Walter Mosley wanted to write less about whodunnit mysteries and more about the mystery of memory, time, and life. He’s quite good at it. The Socrates Fortlow books, the Leonid McGill books, Debbie Doesn’t Do It Anymore, The Man in My Basement….Mosley really has a habit of making existentialism sound entertaining when wrapped up in a story. Aside from Always […]

Surfs up and so is the adventures

Trot & Cap'n Bill Adventure V01 Sea Sirens by Amy Chu

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A pet peeve of mine is picking up book two in a series and not realizing it is book two. I did that with the Trot & Cap’n Bill Adventure series by Amy Chu. I stopped reading it and figured someday I would find book one or just see what I could see in it. What happened was that book one, Sea Sirens, found me. Browsing through some books on our return cart, I noticed it. Just sitting there. Quietly. Waiting. And Sea Sirens was […]

November 19, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: “They tell me that my memory will never be the same, that I’ll start forgetting things. At first just a little, and then a lot.
