Where the Animals Have Better Manners

Riders by Jilly Cooper

August 18, 2023 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR15 Bingo – Sex: What would a bonkbuster be without sex? And here it drives much of the action and drama of the book as well. Jake Lovell and Rupert Campbell-Black were born to very different circumstances which have made them very different men, but they both have the same goal – to rise to the top of the spectacular, high-octane world of… show jumping. As I was embarking on an international trip with limited internet access, I thought it would be prudent to stock up […]

Deck the Halls

The Christmas Party by Karen Swan

December 8, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

On a cold winter night on Ireland’s west coast, Declan Lorne, the last Lord of Ireland, throws a lavish party at his magnificent castle. The location is wonderful, the guests are old friends who all know each other, the atmosphere is great. But before the night is out he dies, leaving behind his bereft wife, three twentysomething daughters and a dilapidated estate with no money to fix it. The next unpleasant surprise comes when his will is read: he leaves the estate not to his […]

Brain Washing. But in a nice way.

Invisible: A Graphic Novel by Christina Diaz Gonzalez

The Cool Code by Deirdre Langeland

Ride On by Faith Erin Hicks

October 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Junior high is tough. And so is reading several creepy/thriller/horror novels or graphic novels in a row. Needed a major brain cleaning, I found three middle reader graphic novels that worked wonders. And not only were they “light” for my adult brain, they had messages and dealt with issues that kids today (and I’m sure we more mature kids have and are having to) deal with. I highly recommending doing this kind of washing of the brain at least once every two to three “intense” […]

Who taught you to ride?

Wild Blue: Taming a Big-Kid Bike by Dashka Slater

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was taught to ride my two-wheeler by my mom, who could not ride a bike herself. But then again, that was par for the course as I learned to ride my trike by watching my teenaged uncle (all six feet plus of him) riding my trike with his legs over the handlebars, and knees to his ears (I have pictures of this, as well as me wearing his motorcycle helmet on that same trike, considering the future issues, I should have had it later) […]

“Obviously She Was a Person to Whom Things Happened”

National Velvet by Enid Bagnold

January 24, 2022 by Tracy 1 Comment

I remember reading National Velvet multiple times when I was younger. I was one of those horse crazy girls – show me a book about a horse and I’d read it. I recently decided to give it a re-read, and I think it holds up pretty well. The main character is Velvet Brown, youngest (age 14) daughter of a butcher father and a mother who had famously swum the Channel years before. Velvet has a quirky imagination that is tolerated and even supported by the […]

Ride ’em cowgirl… or whatever you say to someone who rides English style

Horse Trouble by Kristin Varner

November 10, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I do not care what “horse people” think of Horse Trouble by Kristin Varner as it is a delightful story about a young girl who is dealing with the stress of her life and the horses are really “second thoughts that are important to the overall story but shouldn’t be nitpicked about.” The amount of information and images of horses comes from someone with a “horse background” and therefore, I take their lead. What I absolutely adored about this book is the realistic mother and […]
