When you’re Evil (ish) and make a mean latte

teenagers, self-esteem, good and evil, fame villains, by Kennedy Tarrell

August 6, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I saw the cover of Evil-ish by Kennedy Tarrell I figured it would be in the fantasy genre and I hoped for a graphic novel. The graphic novel hinting covers have fooled me often of late so I was hoping I was not going to be disappointed and instead of a good, old fashioned graphic novel, I would find myself reading a (gasp! clutching pearls) a NOVEL! Actually, that hyperbole works well for this cute, fun, and cozy familiar story. Our main character is […]

Not all men, but certainly a lot of them. Especially rich, white ones.

This book has been 16 years on my TBR list, and I don’t think I added it until a few years after it came out

Gabby Torres Gets a Billion Followers by Angela Dominguez

August 4, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Gabby Torres Gets a Billion Followers by Angela Dominguez has its moments, but I was not the audience, and therefore, most of the moments were lost on me. However, ages 8 to (young) 13 would really enjoy it. The modern themes keep it contemporary, but with a classically familiar feeling of the coming of age story. Gabby is 9 years old. She is an only child and precocious (it’s obvious why her parents were good with just one of her!). She is obviously a bit […]

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

August 4, 2025 by Malin 2 Comments

Buzzword Title Challenge 25: Truth and Lies CBR17 Bingo: Review (this was very favourably reviewed by Pooja, Narfna and Chairbrarian) Five years ago, Lucy’s best friend Savvy was murdered and Lucy was found wandering along the road, absolutely covered in Savvy’s blood. Unfortunately, Lucy also had a pretty severe head wound, which resulted in amnesia, and can’t remember anything about the night in question, before or after the murder took place. There wasn’t enough evidence to convict her, but most people in her home town […]

Does this author ever write a bad book?

Spent: A Comic Novel by Alison Bechdel

August 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Spent: A Comic Novel by Alison Bechdel This graphic novel is not perfect, but it is darn close. There were just one or two small “bumps” for me. But overall fans will get a huge kick out of this. There is much happening and Bechdel uses their usual wit and observations to get the job done. Even if they cannot get the job of writing their new book or the TV script done. It is life during the years of 2020 to “now” (or around […]
