First (second) Bingo! (CBR12Bingo 2: Red)

The Physics of Everyday Things by James Kakalios

October 15, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Due to the Octolet’s obsession with Calvin and Hobbes (raised him right!), I’ve been thinking of a ton of things in terms of Bill Watterson strips. There’s one where Calvin asks his dad where wind comes from, and his dad says “from trees sneezing” which Calvin finds questionable, so his dad explains “no, but the truth is much more complicated.” The last panel finds Calvin telling Hobbes “boy, the trees are really sneezing today.” The challenge in a book like this that explains the scientific […]

cbr12bingo – Red!

Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch

September 7, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Every entry into Rivers of London starts with a splash; we are always diving head-first, sometimes literally, into rivers of blood. Every delightful cover, all done by Patrick Knowles, is a map with a big, red, bloody “X” marking the spot. Every cover is a map, every map is filled with teensy tiny detail, and every seemingly unrelated sketch or nursery rhyme lyric builds together into the marvelous mess that is London. I love his minute details; I feel like I’m looking at a Where’s Waldo illustration for […]

“There is no moral. I just felt like telling you a story.”

Born on a Tuesday by Elnathan John

September 3, 2020 by blauracke Leave a Comment

After having to abandon the gang of homeless boys he was a part of, the street kid Dantala ends up in the mosque of the moderate Sheikh Jamal and is offered food, shelter, and a religious education. Gradually, he becomes one of the sheikh’s most trusted assistants, while at the same time, the sheikh’s previous right-hand man forms a radical movement that threatens the fragile peace between the different sects in this region of northwestern Nigeria. Under the guise of a coming-of-age story, Elnathan John […]

My Mathematical Mind (CBR Bingo: Red – Double bingo)

Fluke by Joseph Mazur

August 24, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I really liked this book, even if it felt a bit like homework. (I guess I shouldn’t have been that shocked given that it’s a math book about coincidence, rather than a coincidence book with math.)  It’s the sort of book I wish I had been assigned in school; I never liked math in the abstract and could only retain it when it had a relationship to the real world. I hated algebra until I took chemistry and could use it to balance equations. This […]

“Hard truths can drive people apart. But great art can bring them back together.”

The Editor by Steven Rowley

I am certainly not having any trouble with reading right now. I’ve read some absolutely amazing (and some that were just meh) books since March, mostly thanks to this group and to the good folks over at One More Page Books. They deliver! But writing has been a challenge. After a full day of editorial work, I just don’t want to sit down with my laptop and write. Even when I’ve read the most amazing book and want the whole world to know about it. […]

The Muppets Did it Better

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

August 8, 2020 by Ale Leave a Comment

As Tropical Storm Isaias took out our power, and one of my quarantine goals is to actually read books I own instead of buying more, I thought it appropriate to read this children’s classic that’s been sitting on my shelf for years. Like many of my books, I have no idea where this copy came from, which partially lead to its appeal. And even though I loved “Muppet Treasure Island” so much, I broke the VHS back in the 90s, I’d never read the source […]
