When Fairy Tales go bad

Deadly Ever After by Ben Aaronovitch

December 28, 2022 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Deadly Ever After is the latest graphic novel from the increasingly extensive Rivers of London series. I read it as the 4 comics but it will also be available in graphic novel form (which is what I’ll buy my mum for her to read). Sequence wise this is the latest chronological story in canon so may not work for a new reader but as it mostly focuses on 2 side characters it could actually work ok as an introduction to a London in which magic […]

Pieces of Silver: A return to the Folly

Amongst Our Weapons by Ben Aaronovitch

October 4, 2022 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Amongst Our Weapons is the 9th full length novel in the Rivers of London series and as per usual is definitely not the place to start if you haven’t read any of the books yet. (If you haven’t they are very good so head back to book 1 and pick it up!). And if you’re wondering why I’ve titled this review Pieces of Silver it’s because I won of the 100 celebratory coins minted for the publication of this book šŸ™‚ We are once again […]

Amongst Our Weapons by Ben Aronovitch

Slow Horses by Mick Herron

Once again, I am unhappy because I am all caught up in theĀ Rivers of LondonĀ universe. BUT- I thoroughly enjoyed this entry, and I was lucky enough to be able to dive right in to another irreverent British crime series! Amongst Our Weapons, the latest from Ben Aaronovitch, is a return to form. After the strange (but not entirely off-putting) Douglas Adams worship of False Value we have returned to the archaic and architectural weirdness of the rest of the Rivers of London series. It has […]

Magical Teenager – just a bit more contemporary than Harry

What Abigail Did That Summer by Ben Aaronovitch

May 14, 2021 by kittenkong42 1 Comment

This new novella in the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch covers events that happened in summer 2013 when his primary protagonist Peter Grant was off solving the case of a missing child in Herefordshire (The Hanging Tree). During that summer we follow Peter’s cousin Abigail Kamara in London as teenagers go missing around Hampstead Heath and then turn up later missing their memories. At this point Abigail is still not formally attached to “The Folly”, but she has already been exposed to the […]

*record scratch* you’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation

False Value by Ben Aaronovitch

February 11, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

well, not me per say- but DC Peter Grant. There was a good deal of magic AND non-magic kerfuffle at the end of Lies Sleeping. Peter, Lesley, Chorley, and the Nightingale himself were all thrown into the process of red tape and blue lines. I readĀ Lies Sleeping back in September of last year, and then stopped dead in the ROL-iverse except for a short story here or there.Ā False Value was available, but no way in hell was I about to mess up my matching set […]

Tales from the Bottom of a Winter Coat Pocket

Tales from the Folly by Ben Aaronovitch

The Furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch

The October Man by Ben Aaronovitch

November 29, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Sometimes you find a bunch of cough drop wrappers when you dig into pockets of coats put away for the season, and sometimes you find a twenty dollar bill. Imagine my delight when Tales from the Folly popped up on Scribd! I devoured the series earlier this year -aside from the latest; I am waiting for the paperback release- and when I saw kittenkong42’s review back in October I was PSYCHED to know that the short stories had all been collected into one place! There […]
