Baking through the UK Seasons

A Bake for All Seasons by Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, the 2021 Bakers

December 12, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

I confess to being a little disappointed in the 2020 Great British Baking Show/Bake Off cookbook; it was pretty and had recipes from the bakers and judges, but very little that wasn’t show stopper-y, as in it would take all day at least and only in large quantity, and not keep well. I am happy to report that the 2021 installment, A Bake for All Seasons looks much more promising. As the title might suggest, this one is organized based on the principle of seasonality […]

Cinnamon rolls, cinnamon rolls, cinnamon rolls

Sunshine by Robin McKinley

December 1, 2021 by esme 2 Comments

Shortly before Halloween, I was struck by the desire to read vampire books. I don’t think I had read any for years (although I have read many of the ‘classics’ including Dracula (obviously), Interview with a Vampire, Salem’s Lot, etc.), so I wanted a ‘fresh’ approach when I was searching. I was limited by what was available to download from our library, but ended up scratching this particular itch quite satisfactorily. Sunshine came several weeks after Halloween and I had completely forgotten why it attracted […]

Bake it Better: Pies, Tarts & Puddings by Angela Nilsen, Jayne Cross

November 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I think I mentioned a long while ago that my mother had bought a bunch of cookbooks on sale as Christmas gifts, and then misplaced the bag for a few years, then found it. I have finally completed the last of these, and it might just be the best. I have been a fan of the Great British Bake Off (or Baking Show in the US, but The Great British Bake Off Bake It Better: Pies, Tarts & Puddings is of UK origin so we’ll […]

Another delectable romance from Lucy Parker

Battle Royal by Lucy Parker

October 24, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

CBR13 Bingo: Self Care Sylvie Fairchild rose to moderate fame four years ago as a popular contestant on the hit baking show, Operation Cake. The moment she both ended her time on the show and immortalised herself on the internet forever was when her sparkly unicorn cake went horribly wrong and hit icy and arrogant baking judge Dominic De Vere got a sparkly hoof straight in the forehead. Now Sylvie has fulfilled her dream of running a bakery, Sugar Fair, in one of the hottest […]

Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty, Simple by Dorie Greenspan

August 3, 2021 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I have been playing with Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty, Simple for a few months. I collect baking books and I have high expectations for Dorie Greenspan. Overall, I quite liked this book and there are four recipes in here that have become a part of my regular repertoire, which is a lot for an individual cookbook. My very very very very favorite recipe is the first recipe in the book – “The Daily Bread: White Bread Edition.” I first made it 4 months ago, […]

Chocolate Sugar Cookies Anyone?

A Good Bake by Melissa Weller, Carolynn Carreno

May 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

A baking book by someone who went to school for chemistry should be more interesting. I was hoping for more new stuff; instead mostly there’s a base recipe (sourdough, challah, croissant, etc) and some variations. Not to say there’s nothing here I’d try, rye in a pate sucree (basically a pie dough) sounds intriguing, as does carrot, currant, pecan loaf. The author is pretty open about their background as well as their preferences in terms of ingredients and equipment; the issue is for me that […]
