Daggerbound: Good thing this isn’t my type of book. Otherwise this might be dangerous.

Daggerbound is the second book in the Swordheart Trilogy and either the 4th or the 6th in the World of the White Rat series depending on if you’re counting chronologically or by publish date.  In this book we acc0mpany Learned Edmund, yes, that Learned Edmund, and The Dervish, a man who has been sealed away in a magic sword for hundreds of years. Learned Edmund has decided he’s done with the misogynists who follow his god, and once he completes this one last job he […]

CBR Bingo: You – As in, “It was always you.” Or, “I love you.” It could work for several of these books, but let’s say Paladin’s Faith. When I first read the Paladin’s one and two (Grace and Strength) earlier this year, I was pretty underwhelmed. And then I was sad that I was underwhelmed because they really felt like they should be in my wheelhouse. So, I put aside T. Kingfisher for a while. I figured if I came back and liked her books […]

Swordheart: I never thought I would read this many books in a year and I’ve run clean out of taglines

CBR Bingo: Wealth – The whole story starts with a moderate amount of wealth being left to Halla by a deceased granduncle, and her quest to get it back for the sake of her own nieces. Halla is the widowed housekeeper of Silas, her dead husband’s now-dead granduncle. Halla was, apparently, the only relative that spent much time with Silas because he left his estate to her, much to the chagrin of his nasty blood relatives. They have locked Halla up until she comes to […]

I was a little lost but it was a fun ride all the same

Adversary to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

Cbr18bingo And (4th book in the Villain series) Bingo #1 Adversary to the Villain is the fourth book in Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s Villain series, with a fifth and final volume to follow next year. I read the first three volumes last summer and liked them very much. I had intended to do a re-read before jumping into book 4 but I never got around to it and I have some regrets about that. Perhaps if I had reread at least volume three I would have […]

“If I was going to be a villain, I might as well commit to the role.”

The Dark Lord's Guide to Dating (and Other War Crimes) by Tiffany Hunt

CBR18 Bingo: One – This is the first book in the Guides to Villainy and Love series. Dark Lord Kazimir kidnaps Lady Arabella to be his bride for the power her heroic bloodline will bring him, and is therefore rather confused when she turns out to be a furious woman with demands of her own for their marriage. I don’t read much romantasy, but I was intrigued by the premise this villain romance with plenty of humor. And for the most part I really did enjoy […]

I feel like I read two different novels

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews

CBR18 BINGO: 26, because it was published in 2026 Just shy of the halfway point in This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, I was struggling to understand why it came so highly recommended. At the start of the novel, the heroine, Maggie, finds herself alone and naked in a ditch, in a world that she knows from her favorite fantasy series. While not a completely new premise, it’s a provocative setup. Maggie’s initial challenge is to find food, clothes, and shelter, and for that she […]
