Dessert Person: Recipes and Guidance for Baking With Confidence by Claire Saffitz

August 1, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr14bingo Dough BINGO (row 3) While I enjoy cooking shows, I don’t consider myself much of a cook. It isn’t that I’m not interested in improving my skills, it’s just that learning to cook full meals feels overwhelming. It seems like I’m always missing some important ingredient or kitchen tool, plus my kids have a variety of food allergies and intolerances that put some tough limits on me. Baking is one thing I have always enjoyed though and have been willing to take some risks […]

Literally dough, but it mostly looks tasty

Bake: My best ever recipes for the classics by Paul Hollywood

July 20, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

For this the first review of Bingo, I have gone level 1 literal for the Dough. So I was in the UK in a bookstore and they had both the signed version and the 50% off version of Paul Hollywood’s new book Bake: My best ever recipes for the classics; guess which one I went for? Anyways, some of the recipes are repeats but there’s enough new interesting things to bake that I might be able to bake my way through this one for the […]

A teenage wizard girl and her somewhat sentient cookie and sourdough do big stuff

A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

February 27, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was a little late to the A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, but I’m glad I finally got it; this one is both fun and a little inventive. The basic story is plucky heroine with limited resources faces off against unknown and then known end-of-the-world kind of badness, and triumphs with the help of some friends. Said heroine is 14-year-old Mona, who lives as a magic user in a world mostly suspicious of magic. Mona’s magic only works on baked goods, which is just […]

Cookies for a cause: the best kind

Smash the Pastry-archy by Planned Parenthood

December 18, 2021 by Bothari43 4 Comments

The Georgia Planned Parenthood was selling these as a fundraiser, and I was more than happy to participate and support! Each recipe is from an Atlanta-area restaurant or bakery. I’ve tried three of the recipes so far. Two are definite keepers (the peanut butter chocolate chip pretzel ones from JC’s Cookies were the best, and the ginger shortbread thumbprint cookies from Banshee were very good), and one I probably won’t make again (the strawberry shortcake ones from Kimball House were an odd consistency). But I’m […]

Baking through the UK Seasons

A Bake for All Seasons by Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, the 2021 Bakers

December 12, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

I confess to being a little disappointed in the 2020 Great British Baking Show/Bake Off cookbook; it was pretty and had recipes from the bakers and judges, but very little that wasn’t show stopper-y, as in it would take all day at least and only in large quantity, and not keep well. I am happy to report that the 2021 installment, A Bake for All Seasons looks much more promising. As the title might suggest, this one is organized based on the principle of seasonality […]

Cinnamon rolls, cinnamon rolls, cinnamon rolls

Sunshine by Robin McKinley

December 1, 2021 by esme 2 Comments

Shortly before Halloween, I was struck by the desire to read vampire books. I don’t think I had read any for years (although I have read many of the ‘classics’ including Dracula (obviously), Interview with a Vampire, Salem’s Lot, etc.), so I wanted a ‘fresh’ approach when I was searching. I was limited by what was available to download from our library, but ended up scratching this particular itch quite satisfactorily. Sunshine came several weeks after Halloween and I had completely forgotten why it attracted […]
