Pinball’s lineage

Pinball: A Graphic History of the Silver Ball by Jon Chad

March 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Genre  The history of pinball and video games is just the start of Pinball: A Graphic History of the Silver Ball by Jon Chad. We get a little history of the country, and we get to see how things have not really changed on one hand (pinball/video games will corrupt our children! Lead them to a life of crime! It is just luck no skill!) and how they have changed (from the tabletop games to our known look for pinball machines, from France […]

No more Tomorrow and I’m ok with that

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

November 6, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Probably unpopular, or at least in the minority, review ahead; I did not especially enjoy Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. The narrative style made it a little hard to tell the difference between Said and Sam’s perspectives, and given that the novel switches back and forth, giving them more distinctive voices would have been nice. They also have really similar personalities in a lot of ways; both have traumas in their pasts which the other sort of knows about but doesn’t seem to want to […]

“What is a game? It’s tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. It’s a possibility of infinite rebirth.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is a pure delight. The best book I have read all year, and now one of my favorites ever. Zevin is the author of one of my other favorite books of all time, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, I was so excited to hear about this book especially when I discovered it was about video game designers. The story starts when Sam and Sadie meet in a play area in a hospital. Sam is undergoing treatment […]

Games Help Us Understand Life

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

August 3, 2022 by MG Dietzel 2 Comments

Bingo square – Font – Hella cool font Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow reminded me a ton of one of my favorite TV shows, Halt and Catch Fire. It examines human relationships and heartbreak and how we use games to cope with and process our lives. I completely fell in love with both the main characters Sam and Sadie and didn’t get that sometimes itchy feeling I get when the perspective changes and I wish I was with a different character. Zevin digs really deeply […]

Games Don’t Seem Fun?

Press Reset: Ruin and Recovery in the Video Game Industry by Jason Schreier

June 19, 2022 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Not too long ago I reviewed gaming journalist Jason Schreier’s Blood, Sweat, and Pixels – a book looking at the development of a dozen games in the 2000s and 2010s. Due to the size of the games and the graphic fidelity, hundreds of people can work YEARS on a AAA game (a major game). It’s controlled chaos and tons of crunch (working nonstop for extended periods). Schreier told some compelling stories in that book, and in this followup he explores what it’s like to have […]

“Where do you stop? That’s the trickiest part.”

Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made by Jason Schreier

June 6, 2022 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I bought this book when it came out in 2017. Ironically, I didn’t get around to reading it until a camping trip this past weekend! It seems silly to go out into the woods to read about video games. However, I’m glad I did have the time and space to finally sit down with a fun read instead of a “should” read. In the end, we only have so much time on earth, so why not do what makes us happy? For me maybe that’s […]
