Adding vampires to history and historical fiction, metaphor or plot device?

Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman

September 4, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 16: History Scarlet is basically fan-fic of historical fiction; totally counts for history since the historical part is real (revolutionary-era France). The historical fiction base is The Scarlet Pimpernel, set in the aftermath of the execution of the rulers of France; if you don’t know the story basically the mysterious masked hero from England saves the lives of French nobility by sneaking them out of France while the French authorities try to put a stop to that. So, basically, Batman who is British and […]

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan

August 12, 2023 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Shelley Parker-Chan and Natalie Naudus (narrator) kicked my head in with She Who Became the Sun. It took a bit to get into the book, listening for 20 minutes here and there, but by the time I hit the 3 hour mark I had a hard time stopping so that I could sleep, and even then I dreamed about Zhu Chongba, General Ouyang, and Ma Xiuying (I am reliant on Wikipedia for spellings because I don’t have the text). The unnamed girl who takes over […]

Among The Janeites: A Journey Through The World Of Jane Austen Fandom by Deborah Yaffe

February 18, 2023 by acrackedkettle Leave a Comment

So, intense fandom is just interesting, right? I never thought about till now, but there are lots of fandoms I find far more interesting than the thing they fan. I will never go to an Insane Clown Posse show, but I love hearing about my co-worker’s Gathering of the Juggaloes experiences. I am utterly uninterested in sports, but I have surprisingly strong opinions about best and worst fans (Best: I’m partial to University of Texas fans, who will cheer for a good play by the […]

“News always reached Miss Marple, one way or another.”

Marple: Twelve New Stories by Various

December 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I would read more of these Agatha Christie short story collections featuring notable authors, for sure. Even the ones where Americans tried and failed to capture that British Marple feeling were entertaining in their failure. But most of these stories were pretty successful! One nailed it completely. Highlights for me were the stories from Ruth Ware (I know!), Naomi Alderman, Elly Griffiths, Kate Mosse, and Leigh Bardugo. This may be the easy way out, but I’ve just copied and pasted my Goodreads status update mini-reviews […]

If you hit me with your cane again, you’re gone

a good myth is hard to kill by MajorGodComplex

Kaz is a smart man, but not smart enough to reconsider snarking the most powerful man in the world when dragged out of Ketterdam and across the fold to work for him. Kaz isn’t worried. He’s got plot armor. The Darkling showed his hand much too early with all of that ‘together we’ll change the world’ bullshit.  Still, when the shadows begin to close in on him he can’t help but consider the possibility he may have miscalculated. ……………. Thanks to his black kefta, that’s […]

Dealing with Our Demons by ravenyenn19

Kaz removed the paper to reveal a hat just like the previous one she had ordered for him nearly a year ago, but of even better craftsmanship. He picked it up and turned it over. The inside was lined in black suli silk identical to what Inej had worn tonight, but just inside along the seam, stitched in red silk thread, was a ‘K’ next to a heart. The font was the exact replica of a playing card. The ‘K’ did not stand for ‘Kaz’. […]
