starts out v fun but doesn’t quite stay there

Elven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart by Sarah MacLean

June 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I think the first half or even 75% of this book was a 4 star, and then it started dropping towards the end such that I couldn’t in good conscience keep it there. As I have mentioned in the past, historical romances where the female character has some rationale for being utterly anachronistic are my jam. Here, we have Juliana Fiori who was raised by a single Italian merchant father after her mother, a fallen marchioness, abandoned them both to gallivant off with another man. […]

An interesting ending to a trilogy

Soulstar by C.L. Polk

June 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Sigh this novel was, if possible, even more disheartening than the prior Stormsong. Again, I think your mileage might very much vary–and as before I will attempt to give a non-spoiler review before diving into some of the plot specifics from the prior novels (no specifics per se about this novel, though). If the first book, Witchmark, was 50% mystery 25% magic 25% romance, and the second was about 25% mystery 25% romance 50% politics, with this third novel we’ve moved to 75% politics, 15% magic, 10% […]

A bit of a step down from book one for me, but ymmv

Stormsong by C.L. Polk

June 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I had really high hopes for this series, but as it turns out the enthusiasm I felt for the first novel wasn’t truly sustained throughout this one (or, for that matter, the third and final novel). I think it’s more of a ymmv type situation, though, so I’ll try my best to frame out my take. First note: I have found a word for these novels along with a whole Wikipedia article! They are apparently called gaslamp fantasy/gaslight fantasy, to distinguish from using steampunk (which […]

Realism? I barely know them

The Governess Game by Tessa Dare

June 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Apparently Evin the Magnificent was going to recommend this book to me as well because she was certain I would like it and what do you know, she was right! Here we have another entry in the series better paraphrased as “Utterly Implausible Meet-Cutes.” One cannot really believe that any of the situations in these novels would actually happen. Does that really matter? …not really? The reason why this novel is my favorite is because it’s the least believable of the lot (winning by a […]

a quirky little book that was recommended by a few people

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree

June 22, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This is like, a cozy coffeeshop AU for a fantasy series that doesn’t exist. Everyone who told me about this book called it super low-stakes, and while I can’t say I entirely agree, this is definitely a book for when you’re a bit tired of *everything* and want to cuddle up. And to be fair–life isn’t ever low stakes. A slice of life book is going to have the same stakes as life. Onto the novel! As people have blurbed, our main character Viv the […]

I might be softly done with this series, but ymmv

Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert

June 12, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

I might be rounding up for this book–I picked this up because I really loved Neon Gods, but these next two entries just haven’t really kept my attention as much. This time around, the old Ares (head of Olympus’ armed forces) has passed away. The spot of Ares is filled with the victor of a series of physical trials–sort of a American Ninja/Triwizard maze/Gladiator set. Helen (of Troy), in this series one of the sisters of the current Zeus (nee Perseus) and a member of one […]
