monstrous affectation

love when you realize there’s more in a universe that you loved

"Wings In the Morning" by Sarah Rees Brennan

September 6, 2026 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This is really just a four star review for the one story in here about Luke Sunborn, he of the lovable himbo with depth persuasion in the delightful In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan. I re-read In Other Lands solely to read this story, because I feared I would not recall enough of the tale to fully appreciate it. Perhaps that would be true, but I can also say that this story is written with enough context and callback that you can enjoy it either way! So In Other […]

A cream colored book cover, picturing a tiny black dog sitting in a nutshell. The title is black and pink.

More Inspirational Than Adaptational

White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link

July 17, 2026 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Another great modern fairy tale collection, though very different than the Adelmann book. Link takes seven folktales and creates original, contemporary fairy tales inspired by them. “The White Cat’s Divorce” is the opener, based on my beloved Madame d’Aulnoy’s “The White Cat” – and Link’s version is actually VERY close to the original story, except for its conclusion (which is a delicious twist). But her narration sounds very “21st century d’Aulnoy,” and the basic premise is the same. So it surprised me when over half […]

sometimes you just want to be in a low-fi band with your sister, but a literal battle between immortality and death gets in the way

The Book of Love by Kelly Link

December 10, 2024 by andtheIToldYouSos 7 Comments

Absolutely perfect. No one can harness both the magic and ennui of being a teenager like Kelly Link. People will be handing this down to younger siblings for generations. Susannah and Laura are sisters. They are also band mates. The third member of their band, Daniel is their best friend and next-door neighbor. Oh, and Susannah’s friend-with-benefits. On the night of Daniel’s birthday, at a wild dive bar with a real carousel on stage, something happens: Susannah kisses Laura’s crush. Laura kisses Daniel. Susannah’s best […]

“The world is a dangerous place, full of people who don’t trust each other. This is why I am staying up in this tree.”

Stranger Things Happen by Kelly Link

May 17, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Stranger Things Happen is Kelly Link’s first collection of short fiction, but- PLOT TWIST: it was the only book of hers that I had yet to read. Oops! I suppose….stranger things HAVE happened. Link writes like the  girl in the back of homeroom who is weird, yes, but also cool and intimidating. She’s probably wearing black and writing allover her arms with a ballpoint pen. She knows a lot and she is not afraid to drop reference after reference and allusion after allusion- she doesn’t care […]

Bunnatine, Immy, Demon Lover, and Ghost Boyfriend walk into a bar…

Get In Trouble by Kelly Link

June 9, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

Well, sometimes it’s a bar filled with men raised by wolves. Sometimes it’s a space ship. A warehouse full of mysterious sleeping people. A magical house full of “summer people”. A haunted house on a space ship. A lake where a few dozen nudists disappeared in the seventies. The penthouse party at a hotel full of dentists and super heroes. The crumbling remains of a Wizard of Oz theme park. A pocket universe that opened above Florida. Kelly Link writes things that are fantastic and […]

Looking for a story about a man in love with a cannon?

Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link

April 30, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 4 Comments

…because have I got the book for you! Men loving cannons, zombies puking up pajamas, purses that can hold whole villages, horror writers that moonlight as upholsterers- this collection houses all of those freaks and geeks- and then some. The novella that gives this collection its title – Magic for Beginners– was the best of the bunch. It was difficult to single out one piece, as they are all delightful mix of suburban longing and creepy crawlies, but this piece reminded me of two of my […]
