I don’t know who wandered more: the book or me writing this review

Tongues, Volume 1 by Anders Nilsen

May 6, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Tongues, Vol. 1 by Anders Nilsen   I have NO idea what was read. The stories all bounce all over the place. The images are busy, the text mixes and gets lost in the illustrations. The images are colorless but are not black and white. The characters are unlikable, even Astrid, who might be the one that will save the world. Or destroy it. It’s still up in the air. There is nothing good and positive. Even The Prisoner has faults and he seems to […]

Echo Echo: Reverso Poems About Greek Myths by Marilyn Singer and Josée Masse

Mirror Mirror: A Book of Reverso Poems by Marilyn Singer and Josée Masse

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

From Marilyn Singer: A reverso is a poem with two halves. In a reverso, the second half reverses the lines from the first half, with changes only in punctuation and capitalization — and it has to say something completely different from the first half. And they claim the right to say they invented the form. Okay, I’m a smidgen skeptical as you’re telling me in the thousands of years of poetry she is the first to think of this? But, you know what? Who cares […]

Adult Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (probably with the lights on)

Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis

February 4, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

With the exception of two stories, overall things are relatively tame for a Horror Book. However, there are places where it can be a little icky or gross. The psychological elements of thriller can be a bit of a trigger (monsters, supernatural) but Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis is best for mature teens and adults so do not let sensitive readers get their hands on it. Oddly enough, despite (or because and I am getting really odd in my old age) this […]

I like cats. And drawings.

The Boy Who Drew Cats: A Japanese Folktale by Lafcadio Hearn

November 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are three main times when I swear. In no particular order, when I am tired and/or mad; when I want to make a point and when something is just so fudging (only I didn’t say fudge) good. And The Boy Who Drew Cats: A Japanese Folktale by Lafcadio Hearn is one of those fudging good books. Amazing story, amazing illustrations, amazing feeling to it, even an amazing back story of the author. Perhaps more for adults (collectors of art books, of Japanese folk tales, […]

Revolting Rhymes: Cinderella by Roald Dahl

August 22, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

(A  few spoilers are included) Do you like Roald Dahl? Well if you do, you might want to try Revolting Rhymes: Cinderella (illustrated by Adam Larkum). Now, I think this book is a reissue, but I am not really sure, but I do know that it will be an edition out in mid-April 2026. I am just going to say two things: One, I am not always a fan of Dahl, but two, I appreciate the work. And with Cinderella, I like the ending as […]

Not sure if this was a hit or miss, so guess it’s appropriate for my third cannonball

The Mysteries by Bill Watterson and John Kascht

March 17, 2025 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

The Mysteries by Bill Watterson and John Kascht  (Watterson wrote and illustrated with Kascht also illustrating) is very odd and very amazing. It is an experience book. The authors/illustrators are geniuses and seriously disturbed. The black and white illustrations make for a unique read. If you like Calvin and Hobbes (Bill Watterson’s signature creation) and its darker side (and it can get deep) then I would say that you are still not prepared for what is happening. I am not familiar with John Kascht and […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
