Do the Dino

The Dino Door by Josh Funk and Renée Kurilla

October 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The online read The Dino Door  by a favorite author of mine, Josh Funk, was enjoyable, but did not  WOW me. I do like the very end with the silly image that gives a fourth wall break, in one of the pictures on the bedroom wall of the child, so that boosts the overall simplicity, but getting there was not my thing.  And when I say simple I mean simple as there are maybe a dozen or so words on the pages total. Writing a […]

I like picture books 2

In Praise of Mystery by Ada Limón

Wings of an Eagle: The Gold Medal Dreams of Billy Mills by Billy Mills and Donna Janell Bowman

It's Fall! (Celebrate the Seasons #1) by Renee Kurilla

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The only issue with picture books is that if you try to write a full review for each individual book it is hard to do. After all, you’re trying to write a 250 word review for a book that might have 50 pages and 200 words. But, that’s why a good Picture Book Roundup is a great way to find books for you to peruse!  Written by Ada Limón and illustrated by Peter Sís, In Praise of Mystery is a romantic and poetic book about […]

Just Because by Matthew McConaughey

May 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The book Just Because is a very Matthew McConaughey type book. His more laid back, modern take on things come out on the pages. He has several “just because” statements. Just because I told a lie, does not make me a liar. Or just because I have the gold (the biggest package) does not mean I won. Or just because I am in the race, does not me I am ready to go (the runner’s shoe is untied).  However, as I am myself and I […]

Magical fairy friends

Wild Fairies V01 Daisy’s Decorating Dilemma by Brandi Dougherty.

January 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Books I Own(it’s been sitting on my pile for over six months!)Wild Fairies V01 Daisy’s Decorating Dilemma is an adorable story about fairies, friendship, helping each other and asking for help. The science of nature sneaks into the tale in a fun manner and there is an afterwards that helps you learn more about the characters, but also a bit about the flowers they represent. This is the first book (as it is volume one) in the Wild Fairies series by Brandi Dougherty. I had […]

Wear ya boots

Farm Boots by Lisl H. Detlefsen

December 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you have a shoe feetish, I mean fetish, then this is the boots for …. I mean book for you. Okay, Farm Boots by Lisl H. Detlefsen is not an adult book, but it does have some really cute boots for the characters to wear in this rhyming book.  Each person has a specific boot for a specific job and for lots of play. Here we see boots for mud, boots for puddles, boots for riding and boots for mucking out the stalls (make […]

Swim, fly, hop or grab a squirrel, but give this book a try

Wild Fairies V02 Lily’s Water Woes by Brandi Dougherty

March 2, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking through some older reader copies the other day and came across Lily’s Water Woes by Brandi Dougherty. Unknown to me, it was volume 2 in the Wild Fairies series. I thought it was odd a few pages in when a few things were mentioned (about a festival, decorating a tree) and thought, “Maybe this is a second book.” And when I started to investigate, I did notice the big number two on the cover (oops!) However, even though it is part of […]
