The book Just Because is a very Matthew McConaughey type book. His more laid back, modern take on things come out on the pages. He has several “just because” statements. Just because I told a lie, does not make me a liar. Or just because I have the gold (the biggest package) does not mean I won. Or just because I am in the race, does not me I am ready to go (the runner’s shoe is untied). However, as I am myself and I am usually thinking
somewhat out of the box thoughts, what kind of messages are we saying? And I feel that some of the sayings did not do it for me.
Such as the lying. The person who lied did it because they wanted to protect the friend/sister that did it. However, is that a good message to teach? You did the wrong thing, but that’s okay you don’t have to pay for it? But then there is the idea just because you have a present the size of you, does not mean there isn’t a pair of socks and not a pony inside. Therefore, not everything about this book is for everyone. There is humor and wisdom, I think it is just a book you need to know yourself and your readers when giving/reading it. If nothing else, it did get me thinking.
Renee Kurilla’s illustrations are sweet, cozy, and soft. They are minimalistic, but not simplistic. There is a lt going on, they fit the tone of the text well. The ages range from younger (around 5) to slightly older, (around 8). However, the picture book format might not be for everyone. And because of some of the adult concepts, these life lessons, there is room to grow and talk to your children about things. This is due in September 2023. I read via an online reader copy.
