Not a damn turtle in sight

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

September 6, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Orange I keep trying to like young adult fiction, to the point where it might be unfair of me to review the genre, since it’s clearly not my thing. There are exceptions, of course (my recent discovery of Eleanor & Park stands out), but generally all I can expect from YA is a solid character to whom teenagers can relate. Turtles All the Way Down scores in its representation of a teenage girl with severe anxiety and OCD, but the rest of it just […]

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

First, this review is sort of temporary so I can get my thoughts out before they fade away. I’ll probably be re-reading soon. I want to have a better chance to digest it, since the first time I read it over Thanksgiving weekend, I had my mom and sister and their HGTV/Hallmark Christmas movie obsession as a constant in the background and it was very distracting. Our Numbered Days by Neil Hilborn

Is it me, or is obsessive compulsive disorder having a bit of a moment? It could be me. I struggled with symptoms for 15 years without saying a word to anyone, not knowing it had a name. I’d heard of OCD, but just the pop culture version – obsessive hand-washing, obsessive cleanliness, and I didn’t have either of those problems. I finally realized that unbreakable routines, magical thinking, intrusive thoughts, motor tics, needing to do things an unusual number of times until they feel “right” […]

We Are All Our Own Refrigerator

Beard in Mind by Penny Reid

August 6, 2017 by Emmalita 2 Comments

This was not at all what I was expecting. Beard in Mind might be the best book Penny Reid has ever written. The lovely Mrs. Prolixity Julien and I have both put Penny Reid on triple-secret probation for sins against writing, reading and the Romance genre. We are harsh because we love and we want her to do better. Beard in Mind was doing better. A big huge thank you to Mrs. Julien for lending this to me. I will be adding it to my permanent collection. […]
