OCD at its best….

Ariel Crashes a Train by Olivia A. Cole

July 3, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My vacation would have had a few more reads covered if it was not for Ariel Crashes a Train by Olivia A. Cole. This is not because the book is bad. It is an interesting theme, it is well written and it can capture your attention as you wonder “what is next,” but it’s terribly slow paced for me. The first half is the build up to a quick reveal and then the rest is more of the beginning only with people trying to help […]

A Poignant Blend of Myth and Survival

Dear Medusa by Olivia A Cole

March 11, 2023 by LB Leave a Comment

This is the kind of story that burrows into your heart and scrapes you raw in the best way. Alicia’s story is relatable in the worst ways, but I love the community and friendships she’s able to develop and the strength she finds over the course of her journey. Last year, the school’s beloved science teacher raped Alicia, but she hasn’t been able to tell anyone, especially because he is so beloved by the entirety of the school. But holding her pain and rage and […]

January 12, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

If I didn’t make it obvious enough in my previous review of Panther in the Hive, I love this series. Set in a world in which the medical chips inserts into the necks of the wealthy and those in corporate jobs have gone on the fritz and caused a zombie-like outbreak, a team of survivors goes west to find safety. Our protagonist, Tasha, continues to be a great combination of brave, quick-thinking, and vulnerable, without falling into any common YA traps: even her potential love […]

This is YA dystopia done right

January 6, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

So I used to read a fair amount of young adult fiction. Up until a couple years ago, it probably took up a good 40% of my reading each year, and was the first section I’d go to in the library, even as an 30-something. I appreciated the willingness to experience along with the avoidance of pretension just for the sake of it I found in YA literature. This included YA dystopian novels, which often told interesting stories with bold, frequently female protagonists. However, anything […]
