Law and Law with some Order

The Gotti Wars: Taking Down America's Most Notorious Mobster by John Gleeson

May 25, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

There’s an overabundance of text written about John Gotti, which is kind of wild when one considers he reigned as the head of the Gambino Crime Family for barely five years. Hell, the man was even one of the last subjects of Andy Warhol’s legendary career. His bombastic, publicity-hunting personality made him the most compelling mobster in the public eye since Al Capone but if you subtract that context, he was an uninspiring thug in a bureaucrat’s job (albeit the bureaucracy of a criminal syndicate) […]

The Watergate Girl by Jill Wine-Banks

July 27, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Watergate has become a later-in-life hobby of mine. I’ve devoured books on the subject, though I missed the news of last year’s release of Jill Wine-Banks’ account, likely due to covid related distractions. Banks was the only female on the Watergate special counsel’s prosecution team at a time when things were changing for women in the workforce. Her experience not only is critical for progress in America but occurs at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, where the well-being of institutions are criticized and […]

The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey

The Dame by Richard Stark

Tricky by Josh Stallings

Quarry's Deal by Max Alan Collins

The Plea by Steve Cavanagh

February 1, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

I read a lot last week but also had a busy week at work (a good busy). Every time I tried to write a review on one of these books, all of them good, I just didn’t have the time or energy. So here’s a big update dump of the stuff I read in the last week and I’d be glad to tease them out more in the comments if anyone is curious… “The True History of the Kelly Gang” I enjoyed large parts of […]

Lawyer Stuff

The Defense by Steve Cavanagh

January 25, 2021 by Jake 1 Comment

I saw this laughable image/tweet in the time I was reading the book and since it’s close to the plot summary, I figured I’d bless y’all with it. There’s a certain condescension amongst book readers as to how seriously they should take page-turning novels. I often hear the phrase “Turn off your brain for this one!” While there may be some truth to it, most fiction requires elaborations and expansions of the truth. You could read something like The Defense and grouse about how something like that […]

Lackluster Career Advice

Safe and Effective Practice by Jean Cote

October 31, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

My home is cluttered with career advice books that I didn’t ask for but which it was strongly implied that I should read.  Because these two were shorter books, I’m pairing them together in a single review: Safe and Effective Practice by Jean Cote: Lawyering is easy says an old white man. Ah, hindsight, that vaunted mountaintop that the experienced get to judge the rest of us from.  Jean Cote was previously a judge on Alberta’s Court of Appeal, the highest court in the province, […]

A courtroom drama come to life.

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson

July 13, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

After hearing Stevenson speak at the Global Leadership Summit and being moved to tears, I knew I needed to pick up his book, and it does not disappoint. Stevenson starts by telling his own story of becoming a lawyer and the events that prompted him to found the Equal Justice Initiative – an organization that provides legal counsel and advocates for those living on society’s margins, the poor, the wrongly convicted, and women & children who didn’t necessarily deserve the convictions they received. He paints […]
