True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey

November 12, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Peter Carey’s Booker Prize-winner, True History of the Kelly Gang, is presented as a collection of the writings of the famed Australian outlaw Ned Kelly. Largely uneducated, Kelly’s grasp of punctuation leaves a lot to be desired, but he tells his story with wit and verve. The style actually enhances the effect, as the reader often will have to re-read a passage to figure out where to insert the commas and periods in order to discern the meaning. Carey’s Kelly tells his tale from the […]

Accept Vassar professorship or head off the the boonies on a dodgy errand? What’s a poor girl to do?

His Illegal Self by Peter Carey

Bingo square – Travel I’ve read one of Peter Carey’s books (Oscar and Lucinda) awhile back (long enough ago it isn’t on my Goodreads list) but what I remembered about reading it was that the first two-thirds were What am I even reading, and then it clicked in and I devoured the rest.  So, readers, let us say I was prepared, and buckled in for the long ride. All right, those of you about my age certainly remember Patty Hearst.  Now let’s just say she […]

I read a lot last week but also had a busy week at work (a good busy). Every time I tried to write a review on one of these books, all of them good, I just didn’t have the time or energy. So here’s a big update dump of the stuff I read in the last week and I’d be glad to tease them out more in the comments if anyone is curious… “The True History of the Kelly Gang” I enjoyed large parts of […]

By dawn at least half the members of the Kelly Gang were badly wounded and it was then the creature appeared from behind police lines.

The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey

I am no expert on anything Australia, but I’ve read enough Peter Carey novels to talk about some of the things he’s concerned with in his fiction. Modes of storytelling is a big one, and of course, official versus unofficial discourse in that story telling. The first book of his I read was Jack Maggs which is a retelling of Great Expectations where we see Magwitch recast as an early Australian, and talking back to the ways in which he’s treated in the novel. This novel is […]

Oscar had never heard the term, but he had much more important misunderstandings on his mind.

Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey

September 30, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is another Booker Prize winning novel, and it’s in the running for the best or top five or so of the best novels. This is a long British/Australian (minor) epic. It’s written in the form of a how did my parents (or grandparents) meet kind of biopgraphy, where we see two disparate people in their early lives with a forward momentum. Oscar finds himself with a calling for the church, and as he moves in this life, he finds that he has an even […]

Theft: A Love Story by Peter Carey

January 24, 2015 by soapyme Leave a Comment

Take one ex-famous painter, Lenny from Of Mice and Men, and Amy Dunne from Gone Girl. Shake well and see what happens. Apparently, Theft is what happens. Michael “Butcher” Boone has had a string of bad luck. He was once a celebrated artist – in Australia, anyway – but his star is on the wane. He had a messy divorce, lost custody of his young son, and was jailed after trying to steal back his paintings from his ex-wife. Now, thanks to one of his collectors, Butcher is […]
