Not as good as I hoped

To Drink and to Eat, Volume 2 by Guillaume Long

December 4, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

When I request a book from NetGalley, I have high hopes that I will enjoy it. I have loved graphic novels that are cookbooks or food centric memoirs. I think communicating about food lends itself to illustration. Cartoonist Guillaume Long writes a culinary comic for Le Monde, “To Drink and To Eat.” While I wasn’t familiar with him, he is apparently well loved. Unfortunately, Long got on the wrong foot with me by writing a jokey little story with recipe about Paul Gauguin moving to […]

Planning for Future Adventures

London: An Unusual Guide by Rachel Howard and Bill Nash

November 29, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People interested in checking out some of the lesser known parts of London. In a nutshell: Part of the Unusual Guide series, this book provides information on hidden away or unusual gems spread across London. Worth quoting: Nothing specific, though there is a slight undertone of snark within the book that made it less austere than the usual travel guide. Why I chose it: I believe I spotted this in a tiny bookshop in Camden Market well over a year ago, assuming I’d […]

A journey that could not take place at the moment…

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

October 9, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Ginny is a 17-year-old who embarks on a journey left to her by her eccentric Aunt Peg.  After her death, Peg left Ginny a sent of 13 little blue envelopes and some very strange instructions.  In the first is some money to get to NYC and then London and the rules: she can only bring a backpack, she is not allowed to bring any guidebooks, she cannot bring any extra money, and she is not allowed to use electronics, which includes contacting the U.S. by […]

Armchair travel

Istanbul by Bettany Hughes

October 8, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Since March, I have been lusting after travel.  I have been planning armchair trips to hike the stone steps of the Inca Trail, leaf peep the fall foliage in upstate New York, tap my shoes along the cobbled streets of Paris.  Turkey is right at the top of my wanderlist- I would start in Istanbul and work my south and west.  Since I can’t go in person, I decided I would do an armchair visit, starting with this biography of the city and following up […]

I wanted more about the assassins, less about contemporary American politics

Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell

September 7, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Pandemic (read whatever you want) BINGO: Gateway, Orange, Nostalgia, Pandemic, Shelfie When I opened this book, I had in my mind that it would be an easy 4-star review. Sarah Vowell is an entertaining writer, a passionate historian, and an American patriot, so I was excited to read this historical travel journal that has been on my TBR list for years. To sweeten the deal, it also promised glimpses into presidential assassins Charles Guiteau and Leon Czolgosz, who assassinated Presidents Garfield and McKinely, respectively, and […]
