Here are the books I read in April that didn’t merit a full review… Batman, Vol. 3: Death in the Family **** Reading a Batman-v-Joker comic is perfect for April Fools Day. I loved Scott Snyder’s Court of Owls run but wasn’t sure how I’d feel about him doing a Joker story combined with the extended Batman Family (which I’ve never been interested in). But this is a good story, a creepy one that continues to burnish Snyder’s credentials on this series. DC: The New Frontier, Volume […]

I Like the Cut of this Guy’s Jib

Shadow of the Silk Road by Colin Thubron

March 1, 2022 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

When I was younger, I adored maps.  (OK, still do.)  At that time, one could check out bound collections of the National Geographic from the local library, and it was the 1920s – 40s collections that enthralled me, because they had maps.  Glorious detailed maps, where there were plenty of empty areas, and the idea that no one knew what was actually there enthralled me.  No one connected with the National Geographic Society, at least.  And one of my favorite such zones was Central Asia.  […]

Random Randomness with Random People in Random Places Randomly

A Carnival of Snackery: Diaries 2003-2020 by David Sedaris

February 6, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

A Carnival of Snackery: Diaries 2003-2020 by David Sedaris is basically what you’d expect from the subtitle and if you’re familiar with the author. It’s really just random collection of things seen or thought by the author over 17 years. The title doesn’t become clear until March 2013 and that’s never explained. But that’s probably the point, to make you try to reason it out, if there is actual meaning or if Sedaris just thought it sounded cool. It reads kind of like a stand-up […]

The Great Stewardess Rebellion: How Women Launched a Workplace Revolution at 30,000 Feet by Nell McShane Wulfhart

February 5, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

I got approved for two books about flight attendants one right after another on NetGalley – so all of you must cope with a themed double post from me. Fly Girl – 3.5 stars Ann Hood became a flight attendant at TWA in 1978 and worked there for many years. In this book, she recounts the places she saw and the people she met, and how the shifting culture of air travel at the time affected her and her job. I do like to travel, […]

Girl on a Motorcycle by Amy Novesky

December 7, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Girl on a Motorcycle is a poetic look at the strength one woman, Anne-France Dautheville, had have to beat the odds and find a place (or in this case the world) she was most happy. Anne-France wanted to find a place where she belonged and was able to be free. This is the true story of Dautheville, who was the first woman to ride a motorcycle around the world. Each place she goes (flying to Canada first, heading to Alaska, Japan, and other nations) has […]

Perfect armchair traveling

Literary Places by Sarah Baxter

October 31, 2021 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

I love to travel, and the last almost two years have made it tough to scratch that itch. When I really sit back and think about it though, one of the best parts about travel is the anticipation. Before I leave I try to watch movies or read books set in there, to really get a feel for the place. Literary Places is a short, beautifully illustrated and vividly described tour through 25 cities that feature prominently in different famous literary works: southern India through […]
