There lived a fox

Fox and the Mystery Letter by Alex G. Griffiths

June 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently one of my coworkers reviewed Fox and the Mystery Letter by Alex G. Griffiths as author and illustrator. I was interested in it as this coworker and I have one of two things happen when a book is talked about by the other: We both love it. Or one of us hates it. There’s not much in-between.  That same day I saw the review for the book and they talked about it in other places, was the same day I received an email with […]

Nutshell I Needed

The Mini Rough Guide to Athens by Various

May 28, 2025 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People looking for some very basic info to kick-start their holiday planning. In a nutshell: Small basic book with information on Athens and surrounding areas. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I’m going to Greece later this year. Review: I’m lucky enough to be able to take a trip later this year, to a country I’ve never been to before. Most of what I know about Greece is from US pop culture, with a sprinkling of knowledge based on what I learned […]

Calvin and Hobbes or Jackson and Irwin adventures?

Jackson's Wilder Adventures V02 Dentistry and Dreams, by Sarah Davidson

May 27, 2025 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I found a series awhile back that I thought was one of the best I had read. It was Jackson’s Wilder Adventures by Sarah Davidson. It was clever and unique. A young boy, Jackson, and his Calvin and Hobbesesque Hobbes, called Irwin the Thylacine, were the perfect narrators. Davidson mixed time travel in a Dr. Who manner with fun educational facts. Granted, there is no actual Tardis (and/or fill in your favorite doctor), just an old cardboard box, but the adventures were as fun. We […]

Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley

May 16, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley is a graphic novel that I almost did not review here. Partly because it is from 2013 and who wants to read a book that old? Well, I did, so I figured maybe someone else would, too. And it is not just for a fan of Knisley (though you probably should be a fan as they have a lot of fun relatable memoir stories) and it is not just for foodies, though that might help a […]

Double Booking: The Tail of the Mummy Cat by Pangburn, Kim Shearer and Nic Touris

May 14, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? (FYI: they still have them. ) Anyway, at first, I thought that the book, Double Booking: The Tail of the Mummy Cat by Pangburn, Kim Shearer and Nic Touris, was going to be one of them when I found an online reader copy of it (though currently available). I figured, well this will be interesting to try and read. Thankfully (or maybe not thankfully depending on if you think it might be fun to try a […]

Are We There Yet?: The First Road Trip Across the USA by Stacy McAnulty

April 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Are We There Yet?: The First Road Trip Across the USA is not “ha ha” funny, but there is a tone of humor to the storytelling of Stacy McAnulty and illustrator Elizabeth Baddeley’s book. Maybe it is because I like a good yarn, a good road trip and have an odd sense of humor. But regardless of my thoughts of humor, this is one of my favorite books I read this month (and due to a recent vacation, I had a lot of books read). […]
