The food she ate, the wine she drunk, and the sexy times in between

An Age of License: A Travelogue by Lucy Knisley

September 24, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If I had An Age of License: A Travelogue by Lucy Knisley before her others, I don’t think I would have liked her writing as much as I do. Usually her work has a humorous edge to things, even when it is the serious story of dating, getting married or having a baby. Her semi-autobiographical books (the younger readers) also are lighter and great in color and details but are not overwhelming. With her travelogue graphic novel we are given a journal/diary of a few […]

A Navy family takes a trip to home

Goodbye, Hello: A Going Home Travel Adventure by Angela H. Dale

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Me the other day looking at online reader copies: Nope, don’t want to read that. Not that one. Oh, I’ll save that. Okay, what do we have here? A sailor and their kid? Nope. Is there anything I want to read????  A few days later: Again, nope, nope, oh it’s that sailor again… I just read something about it…okay let’s try Goodbye, Hello: A Going Home Travel Adventure.  I expected Angela H. Dale’s book to be about a sailor who comes home to his family […]

The Far Land: 200 Years of Murder, Mania, and Mutiny in the South Pacific by Brandon Presser

July 21, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR16 Bingo – Bananas: A lot of people eat a lot of bananas across several centuries and a number of South Pacific islands. Also, this story is utterly bananas. Several centuries after the mutineers from the HMS Bounty settled Pitcairn Island, author Brandon Presser goes to visit this isolated place, where he tries to understand how the bloody and conflicted past has shaped the present day lives of the descendants. Considering how much I enjoy true crime and strange stories, it’s probably odd that I […]

Run: Races and Trails Around the World by Rachel Laidler and Elspeth Beidas

June 4, 2024 by carmelpie 2 Comments

I loved the previous review left for this book, specifically the anecdotes the reviewer shared about a race that allowed her to run in a limited-number small group along a scenic waterway. Over the past eight years, in fits and starts, I’ve become an avid runner. I am slow and I purposely try to lose my mind in the act of running and by just moving my body in a way that feels good. This is tough for me because I am extremely competitive. But […]

What You Need in a Mountain Hike Guide

Day Hiking in the North Georgia Mountains by Jim Parham

May 31, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Minor irony: I ended up getting two local trail/hiking guides at the bookstore, and it turns out the impulse grab (on sale) one was the more useful. Go figure. So, now for Day Hiking the North Georgia Mountains. This book is as the title suggests a description and guide for the various hiking trails in the norther third or so in the state of Georgia. I need this for seeing how much trouble I’m getting myself into for a trail race in soCA in about […]

Run: Races and Trails Around the World by Rachel Laidler and Elspeth Beidas

March 30, 2024 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who like to travel to their run, or who are looking for some inspiration. In a nutshell: One hundred runs and trails of varying lengths, spread across every continent (yes, even that one). Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: It was a birthday gift. Review: I’ve been running for about 15 years now. In those years I’ve run 15 half marathons, and some of the best have been ones I’ve traveled for. There was one in the Black Country near Birmingham, […]
