I started reading YA when my daughter was old enough to start reading YA books. That was over 20 years ago, and we both continue to enjoy reading lots of YA. Many people think YA books are somehow less worthy than other genres of books. Yes, there are YA books that are poorly written, predictable, and just plain bad. However, there are poor quality books in every genre (and “a few bad apples don’t spoil the whole bunch”).
To me, the beauty of YA books is that they encompass every other genre of books. I truly believe that there is something in YA for everybody. I have read and enjoyed YA mysteries, historical fictions, fantasies, romances, graphic novels, horror, etc.
For several years now, I have been part of a YA for adults book group at my local library. Which means I read at least 12 YA books a year. Here are some of my absolute favorite YA books from recent years:
When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson – This was probably the best book I read in 2025 (not just the best YA book, the best of any genre). A wonderful story that pays homage to East of Eden, and weaves magical realism, memorial characters, and beautiful storytelling. Her other books are also great reads.
Under the Same Stars by Libba Bray – An ambitious historical fiction that covers 3 timelines (1940s Germany, 1980s West Germany, and 2020 NYC). I always say I am done with stories about WWII and then something great like this comes along and changes my mind.
Every book by F.T. Lukens – Lukens writes speculative fiction with queer characters that are just so much fun. There are wizards, pirates, mermaids, fantasy, supernatural powers, etc. Their books are an automatic read for me. (I am currently on hold for the latest one which came out last week).
Bianca Torre Is Afraid of Everything by Justine Pucella Winans – a campy over the top YA thriller. This mash of Rear Window and The Birds tackles problems of identity and anxiety while providing tons of humor.
(I have to say that as I was creating this collage of covers, I couldn’t help but notice that they are really great looking covers!)
Here are some questions to ponder (and comment down below about and talk about on our zoom call!)
- What are some of your favorite YA books?
- Who are some of your favorite YA authors?
- Do you have any specific YA subgenres that you like to read?
