I posted my images out of order, but the poems are still the same

Did You Kiss A Cat Today???: Poems for Children by Diane Stevenson, Geri Lipschultz and James Berger

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The first couple of poems of Did You Kiss A Cat Today???: Poems for Children by Diane Stevenson, Geri Lipschultz and James Berger were odd. I felt they were more adult and darker than I think would be appropriate for children. Then, more poems came and more of those were for children. But once again, darker and more adult poems came about. There was realism, nonsense, and other stuff. And I say stuff as sometimes I understood the theme of things, sometimes I did not. […]

Poems and animals, poetry galore. Read the first and you’ll want more

If Pets Wrote Poems: A Parody Collection by Susan Johnston Taylor and Sandie Sonke

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Reading poetry used to be a fun pastime for me. However, recently, I have not been able to find a poet or collection that speaks to me. Things feel overly complicated, too lofty, too trying to be “deep and meaningful” with great subjects, but fall flat in the understanding of what the heck is being talked about. Sometimes I just need Red Fish, Blue Fish, or “Crowded Tub” by Shel Silverstein. Sometimes I like rhymes like that, but other times I just want a nice, […]

Round up at the O-K-bookstore

It Started with a Book Ban by Linda Ravin Lodding

Tic-errific Me: A book about Tourette syndrome (Disability Books for Kids) by Alicia Meyers and Cait Brennan

The Kimchi Fridge by Tina Cho and Cindy Kang

March 6, 2026 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Round up time for my beloved picture books. All titles were read via an online reader copy.   BOOK ONE It Started with a Book Ban by Linda Ravin Lodding A fun and silly way to talk about the seriousness of the idea of Book Banning. And while I don’t promote banning things, I must admit sometimes the color green is annoying to me, too. (And pink, pink can be too cheerful).  Obviously Lodding uses humor to get the message across and goes into extreme […]

Monsterlogica: A menagerie of monsters, beasts and magical beings by Martin Maudsley and Victoria Topping

The Big Book of Useless History Knowledge: 250 of the Coolest, Weirdest, and Most Unbelievable History Facts You Won't Be Taught in School by Kay Wolfersperger, Liz Kay, Lauren Radley, Neon Squid, and Vicky Armstrong

February 12, 2026 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

It is that time of year when the publishers are promoting their future releases. Two of those books that were highlighted are below in this combined review. Neither had a finished online readers copy available, but what they did have made me terribly excited When I started Monsterlogica: A menagerie of monsters, beasts and magical beings by Martin Maudsley and illustrator Victoria Topping (due September 2026) I was not sure of it. Another monster book? Eh. I mean, sure monsters are fun, they could add […]

The Tightrope Wanderer by Federica Ortolan and Marco Leoni

February 10, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ironically, not feeling well while reading an online reader copy might have helped me love the story even more than I would have if I was in perfect health. You see, The Tightrope Wanderer by Federica Ortolan and illustrator Marco Leoni would have probably been just another story about a person who did what he loved, grew old and then moved on. And it would have been nice, but nothing special. Instead, I came away with an appreciation for it that I am not really […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
