Didn’t seduce me into joining the Brene Brown cult

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown

December 7, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Brene Brown comes highly recommended by a few girlfriends, so I picked this one up at the library to see what all the fuss is about. I suspect seeing or hearing her speak may be part of the magic, as reading this was fine but not life changing. The book itself is a slim 160 pages, with the first half outlining the core ideas and the last half digging into 10 ‘Guideposts’ about things to move away from/closer too. The title of the book -The […]

“Vulnerability is not oversharing, it’s sharing with people who have earned the right to hear our stories and our experiences. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.”

Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience by Brene Brown

In one word: Mind-Altering Cannonball Read Bingo: Heart I was already a big Brene Brown fan before I opened this book, so I knew to steel myself for something that was going to teach me, challenge me, and break my brain a little bit. Guess what? That’s exactly what happened! This is not something to read cover to cover but is a manual for understanding and navigating emotions. It’s a good read, great even, but it took me over four months to read by design; […]

“True belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are.”

Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brené Brown

Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brené Brown My rating: 4 of 5 stars In response to all the tension in the U.S. of which the 2016 election became a lightening rod, Brené Brown went to her research to find what it takes to bring people back together so that individuals and society can keep moving forward together rather than apart. She develops an acronym BRAVING that describes the types of traits individuals need to have […]

“Staying vulnerable is a risk we have to take if we want to experience connection.”

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown

Sooooooo, if you haven’t read any Brene Brown, I highly recommend her. Brown is a PhD who studies shame and vulnerability as a research professor at UT Austin. She has also written a number of books that straddle the line between self help and leadership. I came to her books through professional development: I wanted to become a better leader in my professional life, and her book Dare to Lead was suggested to me by my boss. One book in and I was officially hooked. […]

I’m making a final push to wrap up CBR13 with my non-fiction review dump. I read more non-fiction this year than I thought I did, and I was never able to sum up my thoughts properly. I’m trying here, with just moments left!  Food | Jim Gaffigan Although I disagree with Mr. Gaffigan’s take on mustard, I still enjoyed reading Food. It’s a simple take on food — the good, the not so good, how it shapes us and our culture. It was extra light […]

Ugh fine I like Brene Brown

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brene Brown

March 16, 2021 by ardaigle Leave a Comment

I work to not be this person, but I definitely have a touch of the “if everybody likes x maybe I don’t want to like x” stubborn streak. I’ve identified it as sort of a pointless attitude (I mean, I’m only hurting myself) and I strive to be more “let people live” but the overwhelming popularity of Brene Brown had me hesitate to pick up this book. That, and the fact that I was certainthat her writing was going to make me confront some things […]
